Look at it from a purely pragmatic perspective.

A country with which Iran shares a long porous border has become a failed state riven by civil war and ethnic cleansing, millions of refugees displaced both internally and externally, numerous warring factions led by warlords and organised criminals, weeks in which thousands die and terrorists who use truck bombs and chemical tankers.

They cannot afford not to get involved.

They do not want that crap crossing the border.

In their place, you wouldn't want that either.

If you have to ask why, well, there it is. They have the instinct of self-preservation the same as everyone else, and must be expected to do whatever they can overtly and covertly to stack the odds in their own favour.

I don't think "aggressive" is the word either. "Defensive", more like. They have their backs to the wall and have to be sneaky because war will not achieve their goals.

America seems to disagree with their methods. Apparently they may hinder its interests. Too bad, it's not really an argument America can win, and it's not going away. Looks like they will just have to find a balance.

I agree. That is the truth.

Added a few more details so we can imagine even better.

If both Canada and Mexico were in a state of anarchy, occupied by a foreign force like China that had called you 'evil incarnate', openly threatened you with nuclear attack and subjected you to repeated economic sanctions, and whose secret services had destroyed your most popular government 50 years ago and had run a puppet government complete with widespread torture for 20 years after that, leading to massive revolution - what would be your opinion and actions?

For those who still wonder:

1. Iran has borders with both Iraq and Afghanistan

2. The Mossadeq government was overthrown by the US and British services and replaced with the Shah regime

3. The Shah's regime used extensive torture with US "expert advice"; this was one of the catalysts of the Islamic revolution in Iran

For clarification, I don't like the current Iranian government in the least, but the US isn't in a position to claim the high ground on this one.

LOL btu - a fine characterisation.

Given the situation, I think the Iranian regime have been extremely prudent and cautious, in the face of enormous provocation by the US and its lackeys.
