Women survivalists... where are you?

Well, I wouldn't call myself a survivalist (unless you mean do I mean to survive, then yes) but I am certainly attempting to prepare for either a lower energy lifestyle and utter collapse!

Unfortunately, the beginning recession has already hit me - I've been out of work for 6 months, but surviving on unemployment insurance which is just about finished. This sucks - I've applied for over 150 jobs. I'm hoping to get a tax return and start my own business and get on with things. I

n the meantime, I'm using my time well - to store seeds and plan a large container garden, to make contacts, to spend time with my little son, who has been diagnosed with learning disorders, social delays, ADHD and profound deafness in one ear (which is upsetting, but on the other hand he cannot be drafted for some idiots war some day).

The most useful thing I am doing is making him a scrapbook with various survival oriented instructions (how to felt wool, how to make a raised bed garden, how to build a cistern, how to save seed, how to make a solar oven etc) while I have the time and all the scrapbooking stuff from years' past. I'm also making one for my best friend and considering making more for my neice and nephew.

I'm also considering relocating. Again. I'd like to find a teaching community and build a kick-ass small cob cottage and have a big garden, chickens and rabbits. That's my dream.

In the area where I live, there are plenty of peasant girls living in surrounding villages.
They do not bother to wear much of fancy clothes (as they cannot afford these), they are living in derelict houses, and some of them have to milk few cows every morning.
They don't have any survival gadgetry, solar heating, electric cars, guns, piles of gold in a basement etc.
They are all unemployed and most of their boyfriends/husbands are also unemployed.
They are grumbling all the time about "not enough money" and yet whenever I meet anyone of them, she is always appearing in good health, regardless of weather.

These are real survivalists but they don't know it yet.

Very true EU. They have what's called a "green box" site near me. Basically a bunch of dumpsters to encourage people not to throw their trash down some gulley. Every time I go down to throw my trash out, there's at least one or two people searching the dumpsters for usable things they can pull out and take home. My landlord refers to the green box site as "the mall". These are definitely not people that would call themselves survivalists. As the Duke's of Hazard song said, they're just "makin' their way, the only way they know how."

. Actually, my husband made it for me. Since we have goats, not cows, cream is pretty hard to come by - and we usually don't have a LOT at once. (It separates more slowly than cows' milk). So, building on the idea of making your own butter by rolling a mason jar around, he built me a contraption to hold the mason jar with a hand crank. Instead of shaking it, I just crank it, and it works like a charm. A quart jar of cream will make about a pound +/- of butter.
