If anyone is interested I'll do a separate post on general herbal medicine gardening, harvesting, storage and such.

rj5156, do you know which herbs were used by native americans to reduce birth weight of babies? This was important for them, and will be important for those having babies post peak... It meant an easy birth, with no need for cesarian section.

Neat question! I'll scratch around and see what I can find. The American Indian herbal uses have proven difficult for me to find. The Chinese are still using their herbs today and this is well-documented so I'll probably start there.

Off the top of my head, tobacco use, caffeine and cannibis are all indicated as contributing to low birth-weight babies in modern times.

I am suspecting they used the uterine stimulants to deliver the baby when the midwife decided it was time for whatever reason.

Low birth-weight does appear to cause developmental problems and is linked to lower IQ.

Diabetes is probably the biggest cause of big babies. I might choose not to carry if I found evidence of gestational diabetes due to the risks to myself and baby if modern medical help were not available.

Poor nutrition in hard times would probably lower birth weights naturally.

So, BACK TO THE SUBJECT : How to do birth control under a collapsing civilisation Crying or Very sad !

1. Jump three times back after sex. Very Happy
2. Natural birth control.
Essentially it is safe to Fark woman during period (yuk!, I would puke if I am to do it myself unless totally drunk).
It is also safe to Fark woman 15 days after period is over and carry on until end of following period.
Risk of pregnancy is somewhat higher then with modern contraception though.
3. Wash vagina with 5% vinegar (acetic acid) just before sex.
Side effects: Various irritations, ulcerations, or cervix erosion may occur.
Unsafe according to current standards, but was tried on large scale in the past in my country at least.
4. Don't bother about birth control. Increased child mortality and lower overall life expectancy will take care of growing population problem in collapsed civilization environment.

Just make sure everyone gets married then they're guaranteed not to get any sex.

I'm not finding anything in herbal lore. Back to those herbs to start labor early?

Most industrialized places can get away with a c-section rate of 5% with no major increase in materal/fetal mortality. Of those cesareans a good bit of them are going to be caused by a malpositioned fetus--being small doesn't help malpositioning too much. If being small is the result of drugs taken it could even be a very bad combination. The VAST majority of the time a woman's body will make a baby that will fit thru her pelvis. I think that trying to make babies smaller would probably increase mortality more than decrease it. *Uncontroled* Gestational Diabetes will make a large baby that could be at increased risk of birth trauma, but in a post PO world I think that most women who are predisposed to GD aren't going to have unfettered access to high-glycemic index foods, KWIM?
The best bet for increasing the probability of a healthy delivery is nutrition, excersize, and prenatal optimal fetal positioning practices (www.spinningbabies.com). Doing things that could weaken the newborn is asking for trouble.

It's best really not to start labor early. Human babies are born premature enough (compared to other mammalian species) that being born early in order to get an easy delivery is just asking for a high infant mortality rate.
The west has this fear of big-babies that isn't very well founded. Induction of a woman because of the infants' suspected size DOES NOT IMPROVE outcomes. Actually, inductions are often associated with FTP because the uterus isn't ready or because the baby wasn't in an optimal position.

This is one of those things that really is best left untouched for the most part.

Induction of labor in a preeclamptic woman may be prudent.
Using herbs to induce abortion early in the first trimester may be prudent.

Back to the origional topic:

The copper IUD now is approved for use for up to 12 years. It may be a good option for some women and it might be useable long enough for things to be settled down when it's removed. Who knows?
I also highly recomend Take Control of Your Fertility.

If I remember correctly, pioneers used to take pig intestine and seal the end of it(either sewing or burning) and us it as a condom.

Yeah. I think large babies=c/section is just a myth. A lot, not all, but a lot of c/section in the western culture are unnecessary. I gave birth to a 9 pounder, vaginally.

As far as birth control post peak:

1) withdrawal/pullout method works rather well for us now
2) exhaustion is a nice libido killer.
3) not to mention toddlers, if you have one you know what i mean
4) breastfeeding/extended exclusive breastfeeding~all that powdered milk/formula will be hard to come by, and did you know that nursing on demand exclusive breastfeeding lowers a woman's chance of conceiving and stops/reduces ovulation? Some women can go 12+ months w/o a mentral cycle after givig birth while breastfeeding, of course there is a small chance of conceiving during this time, just like w/any other method.
5) I would definitely learn about herbs too.
