So here I am at work, topping off the scanning electron microscope's (SEM) EDAX detector with liquid nitrogen:
ok, ok, so I wasn't wearing any gloves. But I did have my safety glasses on. I didn't spill any nitrogen on me... (And I forgot to take razor blades to work. )
Here are the other microscopes I use at work, an Olympus top-light, and a Nikon polarizing light microscope. I recently learned that the McCrone Research Institute in Chicago is offering an Environmental Microscopy class this year. I've asked my employer if I might be able to attend that class. We'll see. The lab's travel budget has been slashed.
I already have one of McCrone's certificates for Polarized Light Microscopy on my office wall, but another would be cool. I sure would like to see if that cute instructor is still at McCrone. She had wonderful eyes.
I also work in the particulcate matter (PM10 and TSP) lab. My first three years with the organization was performing HPLC analysis of aldehydes and ketones from air samples, (DNPH method) and some GC-MS work too. _________________ About my avatar: http://www.peakoil.com/fortopic25707.html

Oh wow, I wish I could play with a scanning electron microscope for a week or two. Very cool! _________________ I drink your milkshake. |

Everything! We look at all kinds of things with the microscope we have now, for fun, pretty often. _________________ I drink your milkshake. |

lol, yeah. I do a lot of spreadsheets at work too. (For some readers, SCF is refering to the spreadsheet I posted in the PFTF forum in the "[Food] Production-Gardening-General" thread.
link
I would weigh the veggies and nuts and enter the amounts, date of harvest, etc, into the spreadsheet which then calculates the amount of food calories produced from the garden and trees. I still think 8.6% of my annual food calories isn't too bad since I do have another full-time job as shown above!)
I've already started my "Garden Logbook 2008" spreadsheet. I takes just a few minutes to update the spreadsheet each day that I harvest something.
Edited to correct thread reference. _________________ About my avatar: http://www.peakoil.com/fortopic25707.html

This was taken with the polarizing light microscope:
Science meets art.
The lead iodide looks yellow to the naked eye, but is very birefringent in polarized light.
My avatar was taken with the SEM. Oil soot. Perfect metaphor for the future. _________________ About my avatar: http://www.peakoil.com/fortopic25707.html

Did y'all notice the Far Side cartoons on the wall? I now find myself in some of Gary Larson's microscopy cartoons:

Good day from Pheba, from the farm:
I have never figured out how to do the url photo thing. So, I did what I knew how to do. I went to Webshots and put up a bunch of photos of hubby and I on the farm.
I also put in a bunch of photos of my sewing machines.
I also do not know how to do the blue thingy, so I will just type in the address:
http://community.webshots.com/user/Phebagirl
Would somebody please go and see if they can access my photos. I would like to know if it worked.
Thanks,
Pheba. |
