How then, do we move backwards? How does a society, with most of the people having no clue of future events, move from being dependent on a vast and intertwined network of goods and services produced by the indigenous people of whereever, to a local resource and renewable energy based society, and do so in the timeframe available (20-30 years using the most liberal extimates, 10-20 with resonable estimates, 5-10 with worst case scenarios), all the while prices on everything increasing, world politics getting more militaristic, governments continuously reducing civil liberties, shortages of goods on the market and weather patterns resembling bad Hollywood movies?

Since there is no independent international body that measures/estimates the amount or reserves, we can never be sure how much recoverable oil there is left. Most figures we have today are received from state owned oil companies and IMHO completely unreliable. The Gulf State and OPEC figures are particularly suspect. _________________ "Modern Agriculture is the use of land to convert petroleum into food."

I would find about 3-5 sources and find a mean (average) to their collective figures. I would wager that no one is spot on.
Agreed. Take SA for example, I have read estimates ranging from 160 billion barrels, right up to 1.2 trillion barrels !! How the f*** you can get an estimate wrong by these margins lord only knows!

Colin campbell's databases are about as detailed as you could hope for... which is essentially based off of the oil and gas journal... which keeps a running track of reserves...
However, Oil and Gas only reports what companies and governments tell it.
