I guess Americans will have to find their feet now. They are under there, honest Very Happy

Quote:
The EU should ban the sale of cars that do under 35 miles to the gallon, the ex-chairman of oil giant Shell says.

Sir Mark Moody-Stuart told BBC News the motor industry would adapt to cope with stricter environmental rules.

The UK Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders opposes the idea, saying drivers of the most polluting cars pay extra through road tax and petrol duty.

But Sir Mark said this simply let rich people avoid taking responsibility for tackling climate change.

Expanding on the views he expressed in a BBC News website Green Room opinion column, Sir Mark said: "Nobody needs a car that does 10-15mpg.

"We need very tough regulation saying that you can't drive or build something less than a certain standard. You would be allowed to drive an Aston Martin - but only if it did 50-60mpg."

This is stupid. Gasoline is heavily taxed in Europe. These taxes enable politicians to compensate for the energy use handsomly. It's a political choice that they prefer to use the money to wage war instead. We need more 10 mpg cars and use the money to make factories more efficient or give poor guys free hybrids in exchange for their old cars.

If you buy into the soft landing scenario then this is a great idea to try to cut your dependence on oil ahead of the early phases of the deplition curve.

It may not be a widely held belief here, but I believe that the bosses many big oil companies are begining to worry about there social license to operate. They need to prove to Europeans that they care about the enviroment and human rights. The fallout from Brent Spar and Ken Sara-wiwa and other problems heavily dented the public image of oil companies in Europe. They probibly feel that they need to be proactive on these kind of issues before the EU and other governments get involved.

I would think that oil companies would promote energy efficiency simply because it would enable them to be in business longer.

Regarding 35mpg, that sounds like a good baseline to me. Certainly it is within reason. We have a couple of cars in our family, and they all get at least that kind of mileage, average city and hiway. And the newest one is a 2001 Chevy/Geo Metro, which we find works fine for 3 adults on short trips (100 miles or so). And 2 of the adults are 200+ pound, 6 foot+ tall males. We don't really need a vehicle outfitted like a luxury lounge.

that sounds like a sound energy policy if i've ever heard one.

Governments and large corporations (except maybe Blackwater Inc.) kind of have to assume a soft landing of some kind. Hard landing plans are for individuals and small groups to work out for themselves.

I assume this wealthy “Sir” also plans to ban all private aircraft, powered pleasure boats, ATV’s, snow machines, new houses over 3000 square feet, etc. One could argue that large, comfortable vehicles at least still serve a legitimate transportation purpose, albeit an ineficient one. Almost all uses of power pleasure boats, ATV’s, snow machines and small private aircraft are purely for pleasure. Surely all of these wasteful, carbon emitting activities that serve absolutely no legitimate economic purpose should be banned long before inefficient vehicles.

Sir Mark Moody-Stewart is just another control freak who wants to limit other peoples choices, but not his own. Let see if he is willing to live in a modest house and give up his private jet. I hate extreme hypocrisy more than anything else. Live free or die!

I think you're right.

I'm looking at the Fuel Economy Guide for year 2008,
put out by the US DOE and EPA. There must be a thousand or
more "models" listed, showing the stated city and highway
mileage ratings.

The number with 35 or more, city or highway, appears to be
fewer than 10!

I don't travel overseas for holidays every year. I want to drive a bigger car.

I have a car that does 5mpg but drive it once every 3 months.

What we are really starting to get to is rationing.

But all the daydreamers and cornucopians like JD say unimpeded economic growth will just go on forever.

35mpg mandatory LOL Very Happy

Are we saved yet? Will this free up more oil for the new Indian car being entered into their market? (Jevons) Is the landing going to be softer?

The new US fuel economy law uses the EPA ratings system from the 70's. The EPA estimates were made more realistic (lower) in 2008, as they were previously about a decade or 2 ago. Therefore, a 35 MPG requirement in the new law based on the 70’s methodology means somewhere between 25 -30 MPG using the current 2008 EPA system.

Honda almost meets the new law already in the US, because they don't sell any real trucks. Just cars and butched-up converted minivans called the Pilot and Ridgeline that can't tow or haul much of anything.

Agree totally. Perhaps "Sir" should drive a 35mpg car and do less air travel, eliminate boating and move to an apartment instead of multiple mansions.

But yeah "I" got to drive a 35mpg car so he can play with his toys.

Tax oil instead. A lot. We are increasing gas taxes by 50 cents a gallon next year. This with a right-wing government.

It can be done and it should be done. Every year a hike of 50 cents. Let the market work its magic. No detailed regulations.

Actually, you can see his house in documentary, but I can't remember which one. Maybe "the end of oil"? or "The end of suburbia". It was a really small house. I would say smaller than most houses built in America today. More like a small cottage.

If someone wants to build a house (at least here in Canada) we have to meet building codes. These include a specific amount of insulation. The house has to be reasonably efficient. Why should cars be any different?

What part of free market economics requires big government taxation on a natural resource?

Use it till it's gone then we will adjust, because we will have to. Smile

I love free markets. *kisses the goodness of markets*
