We cannot drill our way out of this oil crisis. Since 2000, oil companies working in the U.S. have doubled the number of wells drilled per year.

Although increased drilling has added new oil to the nation's supply, it has not done so fast enough to offset the terminal decline of existing fields.

We are going to have to import more of our oil. Period.

watch that Oil price - $120 anyone?

Quote:
Turkish forces have crossed into Iraq to launch an operation against Kurdish rebels said to be sheltering there, the Turkish military says.

The Turkish army, which has thousands of soldiers on the border, said troops had entered the north on Thursday evening and were pursuing rebels.

It promised the force would "return home in the shortest time possible after its goals have been achieved".

An air and artillery campaign preceded the land operation, the military added.

An unconfirmed report by Turkish TV channel NTV says 10,000 soldiers have crossed the border, Reuters news agency reports.

They have been doing this for years, but this looks like quite an impressive raid in force.

Sad news but inevitable. The US gives the Kurds money and training to raid Iran, then they use those resources to aid the PKK and the US is caught between its only friend in Iraq and one of its only friends on mainland Europe.

Hi, fist post. it's difficult not to relate this to kosovo's independance declaration. Probably this is all a little "behave" signal from the turks.

What in the world is up with these Turkish troops?

How much are those poor guys carrying? I assume they won't be trying any combat with those loads. Let's hope not, anyway.

I hope Turkey doesn't use WMDs on the Kurds.

If Turkey is a member of NATO, does that mean that the U.S. is obligated to help them in their struggle against the Kurds?

NATO is not obliged to help the turks as they are the invading force.
US however didn't get much help from the kurds and Turkey is a US friendly nation but getting involved would give little gain, so I think they will choose to just sit on the sidelines in this conflict.

Turkey was attacked first by the PPK, and the US establishes the principle of invoking the NATO charter after an attack by non state actors in the aftermath of 9/11 so it is theoretically possible for the Kurds to invoke the NATO charter against the PKK.

Erdogan is not fool enough to do so though.

Zardoz,

Look really closely. They're carrying white goats. That way they can have have fresh food along the way to the magical Kurdlandia.

I heard from a very reliable source that deep pocket oil traders paid Turkey to invade Iraq thereby raising the price of oil earning them a quick few hundred million.

Turkey feels very miffed by how Kurdistan was divvied up post WWI and thinks Mosul and Kirkuik should have been in Turkey not Iraq.
