Crickets, caterpillars and grubs are high in protein and minerals and could be an important food source during droughts and other emergencies, according to scientists.

She suggested a more practical benefit might be adding insects to animal feed or crushing them into a meal powder that could be used to make cookies or cakes.

Meyer-Rochow said aid agencies might even find a way to harvest crop-destroying swarms of locusts and crickets.

"These mass outbreaks could be a valuable food source," he said. "If the technology is available, they could be ground up like a paste and added to the food humans eat."

Less energy from oil, more global population...

Insects and jellyfish, instead of meat, fish and potato.

Imagine how much we can grow the GDP on grubs and jellyfish.

One of my favorite bars in DC in the 90's was the Insect Club mentioned here.

Quote:
Sadly, an establishment in Washington, D. C. known as The Insect Club no longer exists. It was a popular restaurant and bar in the early 1990's, and served items that included crickets and mealworms combined and served in delicacies.

On the bar, it had little bowls of crunchy crickets and maybe roaches that were salted and very yummy.

How many times have you seen Sally struthers selling the idea of sending money to feed the children?

They show some bloated kids in Africa.

They have nothing to eat.

They will die if they don't get something to eat.

...and they have 15 pounds of flies on their face.

Doubt insect guts would pass Calif* emission standards. If you're talking about feeding something besides the car, what could be more important than feeding the car?

We really are headed for a dark future. Enjoy today's plethora of food choices while they last.

Of course some (a lot?) of people would rather die than crunch down on some raw bugs.

More for the rest of us who are willing, I suppose.

Where is the doomer fun in that Smile

Besides someone might steal my chickens, I don't think they'll steal my bugs.

The dark future is, at least in part, caused by peoples' mistaking the peculiarities of their own lives for universal norms. I live in Thailand and bugs are a completely normal part of the diet.

อร่อยมาก!!!!!

Sorry, I forgot, due to their limited reproductive capabilities, bugs are not scalable! ; - )

Rip open a rotting log and you will see plenty of choices.

Exactly, I'm a little disapointed in the board here. Nothing wrong with bugs. The Thai grocer down the street has them in the freezer. I think they have candied ones with ginger for the kids too. Now, chicken feet that's just gross. One of my Chinese-origin coworkers brought that in at a pot-luck in some very tart pickled-type sauce. Bleh.
