For a minute there I thought I had to get off my couch, when all the while the fact is we don't have to do anything much but keep things afloat for just a few decades more! In fact, we'd best shut up about PO, because if our offspring finds out we knew about it all along, they'll turn and wring our necks come 2036!

And the weather chat drones on into spring!

Will the great Southeast Drought of 2007-08 end or continue to grind this region into a dusty inferno?

What's going on where you are, weatherwise?

Talk about it here . . . weather [sic] boring, exciting, scary, or disastrous.

Winter is lingering. Last year in early/mid March we were into Maple season, which requires freezing nights and days in the 40s.

This year, so far, with today as an exception, it's been below freezing constantly, and the future forecast says to remain so for another 10 days.

That makes for a long winter.

Here in Chicago, people are dragging along. Winter keeps on in dribbles and drabbles. It refuses to let go, but in hindsight, it is we who had several years of mild winters to make us "soft". This winter was more like the winter of my 60's-era childhood, lots of snow, cold, sleet, hard driving weather.
Makes for a strong constitution, which we've always prided ourselves on.

I feel that if and when Springtime does come, I will be deluged at our garden centers, just for the love of people wanting to see the green-ness of Springtime, the colors of flowers, sunshine and birds chirping again. Renewal, and rebirth. One can close their eyes and think of it.

Too bad when the eyes come open again, there is Iraq, Hillary and Obama, Wall Street and the Fed, etc. These things are a Winter blight of their own, on the soul.

Spring should soon be coming round the bend. Last year, we had a last, late snowfall (just an inch or two) in early April, but once we had some mid-to late April sunshine, it warmed up rather nicely, hope we can have it soon. May is one of my favorite months of the year. My maiden name is based upon it...

Blu - great post.

Made me think of Bill Murray quoting Chekov in Groundhog Day.

I agree, but I'm hopeful La Nina will soon wane and the pattern will FINALLY change.

Hope! That's what I need. Hope.

Blutkatzen: "Garden" and "Chicago" somehow seem like oxymorons, but I know that's a moronic statement. Some of the finest gardens in the world are in big cities.

Is that avatar of yours new? Nice.

Thanks for the report.

We still have 3 feet of snow on the ground, but it seems a little milder the past couple of days. I am not exaggerating the three feet. I fell into a couple of holes that had to be over 4 feet yesterday.

We will do some tapping this weekend if the weather holds. I tapped about 15 trees yesterday. The maple season has begun!

Spring is going to happen.

Thanks for the accolade Pope Gideon.

Heineken, that is a new avatar, yes, it is from one of my yahoo forums I own, studying the healing traditions of the Pennsylvania Deitsch. It is one of Lee Gandee's works, a Hexenmeister. It is a 12-pointed star, to bring love and luck throughout the New Year. I figured if I want to stay on the board, I'd better spread it around, since there is enough of other things here, sometimes.

It was re-interpreted by a member of my list who loves to paint, and had worked for a large paint company, lucky enough to enable them to indulge in their hobby.

As always, your good wishes are dear to me, my friend. Hope all is well and manageable there in your world. Happy Springtide!

Here in Los Angeles it has been sunny and in the lows 70s for the last week or so. Prior to that we recieved some much needed rain. We probably got more rain the Jan & Feb of 2008 than we got all of 2007.

We had a beautiful, million-dollar rain overnight. About two inches. My pond is full and gushing over the spillway. No more "crispy leaves" when you walk in the woods. My recently planted 3,000 tree seedlings are pushing their roots deeper into the sandy southside Virginia soil. I've got 300+ more seedlings coming, and it will be easy to use the planting bar in the softened soil.

How do I spell relief? R-A-I-N.

There's also a good chance for showers on Friday and Saturday.

Too early to tell if the pattern is changing, but drought in Texas and dampness in Virginia is a more normal state of affairs.

Eugene...so far, a perfect spring! Just the right balance of rain and sun.

More heavy rain coming tonight and tomorrow. This is highly unusual, during this drought, so close on the heels of the previous rain. If this keeps up we'll be in good shape. I'm very encouraged and am feeling optimistic about the 3,300 tree seedlings I've just planted. If there's one time they need rain it's in the period just after planting!

We just woke up to almost an inch of snow accumulation. It's still coming down but melting a little faster than it can keep up with. My son enjoyed the heck out of it, having never seen real snow since he was a baby. Snow is unusual here, especially this time of year.
