| I am really enjoying your journal, Xerces. You are inspiring! Your experiences gives me hope for city dwellers. I, too, would like to pass on to others what I learn about growing food for my family. In that regard, I can hardly wait for spring here in Alberta so I can get out into the yard again. It is March 16th and -14 degrees with still quite a bit of snow here, so gardening will have to wait probably 8 weeks. I'll keep checking in with your blog to see how your expansion is going. |

I've enjoyed reading your blog too for the last year since I discovered it in a link from somewhere else. And I must be only one of many! _________________ Skeptical scrutiny in both Science and Religion is the means by which deep thoughts are winnowed from deep nonsense-Carl Sagan |

Great work Xerces! Here's what my expanded garden looks like:
It's work in progress, but it will measure about 80 ft in length x 10-12 ft wide. I finally got a new wheelbarrow. I had seven yards of garden/landscape soil delivered by a dump truck, but it could only get within about 80 ft from the garden because of trees and other fence, so I've been moving the soil manually. I sure am glad Advil is still available.
Once the soil is hauled in, I have to finish the chain link fence, one more gate, which means about three more post holes still need to be dug, cement mixed for the posts, and then some more planting can begin!
The rosemary bush is doing great. You can't see, but there are baby pumpkins sprouting, and about a dozen pepper plants, and some onions and tomatoes on their way. Most of the beans have been planted too. _________________ About my avatar: Guess. |

looks good xerces! Planting fruit trees is very rewarding isn't it. Wait until the trees have been in the ground for a couple of years. It's very satisfying. When I consider my garden, I love my fruit first fruit trees as now they look like much more than they did, and they are such low maintenance (compared with vegetables).
And of course, compost. Be careful though... it's possible to get addicted to compost! I've got two huge bays that I'm always filling just because I love adding compost to my varies beds and trees. |

PeakOiler.....that new garden space looks great! Is the fence there to keep out deer? Additionally, the soil looks semi-worked, did you do this by hand or with a machine? _________________ http://backtowilderness.blogspot.com

Thanks. The fence is primarily to keep the rabbits and dog out. It's only a deterrent for the opossums and raccoons. Deer could easily jump over it, but I've never had a problem with deer.
The soil was from a landscaping company. It's a mixture of granite sand, loam, and composted turkey manure.
Edited to correct spelling. _________________ About my avatar: Guess.

This week I made some additional expansions to the suburban garden. I built 7 asparagus troughs and set down the crowns. The asparagus bushes are perennial, if this works, we'll be getting free greens for the next 15 years. Additionally, last year's green onions seems to have gone feral on me. I had harvested the original 4 green onions over and over again until they were gone. But apparently some of their seeds had been dispersed by the wind or something. There are now dozens of young green onions colonizing the lands between my backyard and my neighbor's flower beds!!!! :D

That looks great. I dont have alot of sun in my yard due to trees but I got one of those Grow-boxes. Those things are awesome! My neighbor has a huge garden, so if food became scarce I could always help myself to his garden |

Looking good, Ludi!
Last weekend I finished hauling the remainder of the the six yards of garden soil that was delivered.
btw, a "yard of dirt" refers to a cubic yard, and depending on the amount of water in the soil, can weigh about 2400 lbs. (And with the recent rains, I know the moisture content was pretty high.) So that was 2400 x 6 = 14,400 lbs of soil I hauled by wheelbarrow. (No wonder my back has been sore for weeks!)
This weekend I will start planting more stuff. _________________ About my avatar: Guess. |

Thank you. I've thought about a blog, but the "To Do" list is already too long, so I probably won't ever get around to it. _________________ No original ideas are contained in this post. |
