We cannot drill our way out of this oil crisis. Since 2000, oil companies working in the U.S. have doubled the number of wells drilled per year.

Although increased drilling has added new oil to the nation's supply, it has not done so fast enough to offset the terminal decline of existing fields.

We are going to have to import more of our oil. Period.

Hey Airlinepilot, where would I look to find out how many commuter jets the major airlines buy in an average year vs how many they have been buying recently?

Figures like those might be solid evidence of where they are headed vs all the speculation I see on this and other threads.

AirlinePilot, do you happen to have any graphs showing the increase in jet fuel prices over the past years?

And the Upward climb continues.....

Avgas 5.06

Jetfuel 3.46

I'd say we will be at the point fairly soon, where you start pricing a lot of General aviation flying right out of the market. A good portion of small aircraft flying is purely recreational.

I'm starting to think that we will have zero warning when we reach certain price levels which have some sort of cascading effect on the rest of the economy. If we are not there already I wonder what it will take?

Avgas is still climbing, up to 5.22 nationally this week.

Jet fuel had moderated ever so slightly but is back up to 3.61 nationally.

I've read somewhere that fuel is ~30% of an airline operating cost ..
That was some time ago, do you have some data or guesstimates of the fuel component now ?

On engines, a long time ago ,some big gasoline engines with dirty cylinders heads, when switched off hot would "diesel " and kept on running without ignition
the solution was to restart the engine and get it to run at low rev to cool it somewhat, then switch it off again

a typical snafu also was to mistakenly put some diesel in the gas tank, the engine typicaly had been running and was hot, the lines and pump would have untainted fuel, The car would restart normally but a few moment later, run very badly with no guts and a lot of smoke, the chamber and the plugs would usually be dirty.

Rising fuel costs push airfare sky high
Quote:
Airlines ratcheted up the pressure on fliers ahead of the holiday weekend, significantly raising ticket prices to offset the runaway cost of fuel. The three biggest carriers each boosted most domestic fares by up to $60 roundtrip, while budget airline Airtran Airways raised its leisure fares by $30 roundtrip.
UAL Corp.'s United Airlines led the bigger round of increases late Thursday, lifting roundtrip ticket prices by $10 to $60, depending on how far passengers fly and the competition on the route. Travelers will pay the biggest increase on routes of 750 miles or more - less than the distance from New York to Chicago - that low-cost carriers such as Southwest Airlines Co. do not serve.
"It's part of all the work that we're doing to try to offset fuel costs," spokeswoman Robin Urbanski said.

The MSM are now using terms like "runaway" and "sky high" to describe the rising cost of fuel. We have long bemoaned on these threads the lack of attention that the media have paid to the issues of PO oil.

But now they are starting to use terms that match reality, and yet somehow I am not comforted. Sad

How long till another airlines folds. How long can the industry as a whole continue at these levels, not to mention the much higher levels to come.

Don't want to spam the thread with news links, but the wires are heavy today with very pessimistic forecasts for the airline industry.

UK Telegraph:

British Airways warns oil surge will put a rash of airlines out of business

Quote:
British Airways believes it can ride out the storm caused by the rocketing oil price by making capacity cuts of only around 2pc this winter.

Willie Walsh, BA's chief executive, said he had no plans to follow the swingeing 12pc cut announced by Oneworld partner American Airlines on Wednesday, that will see it remove at least 75 of the 954 aircraft in its fleet.

But he warned that, with the oil price topping $130 a barrel, the entire aviation industry was heading into uncharted territory and predicted a rash of airline failures. Fares would also have to rise.
...
Mr Walsh said: "I don't think the industry can absorb these significant increases. Our fuel bill represents 35pc-37pc of our cost base. In 2000 it was 9pc. For a low-fare airline it represents about 50pc. Some of the low-fare carriers can't make money at $85. For them this is life threatening. Those that are weak are going to go out of business."
