Like the illusion of Wall Street, with its vast and powerful investment banks, now shuttered, China too is an illusion perpetuated by the Globalists that gave us the 15,000 mile Caesar salad, poisoned cat food and lead based paint on babies' pacifiers. Like the illusion that money would come from thin air to always push housing prices higher, China has spent a generation pursuing its illusion. Pursuing an unattainable dream to be like the West, while 6000 years of its carefully shepherded top soil blows into the sea.

It can be. Alternatively, the appearance of kindness can be an effective manipulative tactic.

As for what happened to me - I embraced reality. As will you, in due and proper course.

Understand that what you perceive as a negative, I see as a positive. I prefer to embrace the cold, hard nature of steel.

Your mileage may vary.

So we both get what we want, ergo we're both happier. Works for me.

Lets see here..

Quote:
# Glibness and Superficial Charm

# Manipulative and Conning
They never recognize the rights of others and see their self-serving behaviors as permissible. They appear to be charming, yet are covertly hostile and domineering, seeing their victim as merely an instrument to be used. They may dominate and humiliate their victims.

# Grandiose Sense of Self
Feels entitled to certain things as "their right."

# Pathological Lying
Has no problem lying coolly and easily and it is almost impossible for them to be truthful on a consistent basis. Can create, and get caught up in, a complex belief about their own powers and abilities. Extremely convincing and even able to pass lie detector tests.

# Lack of Remorse, Shame or Guilt
A deep seated rage, which is split off and repressed, is at their core. Does not see others around them as people, but only as targets and opportunities. Instead of friends, they have victims and accomplices who end up as victims. The end always justifies the means and they let nothing stand in their way.

# Shallow Emotions
When they show what seems to be warmth, joy, love and compassion it is more feigned than experienced and serves an ulterior motive. Outraged by insignificant matters, yet remaining unmoved and cold by what would upset a normal person. Since they are not genuine, neither are their promises.

# Incapacity for Love

Jack, if you are a true sociopath you could be quite a dangerous character. I do like reading your post, you have a sharp wit and much to bring to a discussion. But I would not like to see you as a boss, family member, neighbor.. Ect. Empathy is not weakness, and something that you should try to develop. (maybe with professional help?)

Not really. Still waiting for you to surprize me, to act unexpected, which would make this expectation machine happy Smile

But am glad you like machines, and therefore --- MEEE! Exclamation

Lately, there has being a growth in flames in some forums @peakoil.com... my guess is that some of our doom predictions are starting to happen, and there's anxiety in some posters.

I noticed that too. It's like an epidemic of unkindness for crying out loud. Those who cuss and flame need to ... you know.

Yes, if some here cann't even handle what we were talking about for years when it starts to get real, then there's even less hope for how non-peakoil-aware people will react when TSHTF.

And did you mean curse?

No, you don't really know reality if you behave in such a negative way. What is more probable, if you're not an attention whore, is that no one loved you. It happens also with chimps, make a chimp survive but appart from all other chimps, and he/she will be bitter, sad, depressed, angry and bad adapted as an individual.

One might conclude that, mightn't one? And if some good folks had given me a bit of training, I might be able to survive, even in a hostile environment.

There is wisdom in your words.

Not a weakness? Empathy will constrain your actions. It will cause you to hesitate, and to act counter to your best interests. At the least, you will spend time unproductively.

Contrast this with a more practical approach. Act as if you feel empathy toward those who can advance your agenda. Then there is something that might be gained. Or, act as if you feel empathy in order to disarm another's mental defenses. But the operative concept is emulation rather than experiencing the actual emotion.

I believe you'll find I'm right.

Finally science is catching up with Eastern wisdom.

Science: Empathy makes you smarter and happier.

Quote:
For example, many programs in the schools have taught children how to be more empathic. Interestingly, the children who participated in these programs improved on a number of levels. They tended to do better academically, score better on tests of higher-order reading comprehension, display enhanced creative thinking and critical thinking, show an increase in pro-social behavior (sharing, cooperation, trust, kindness), and experience a decrease in bullying and aggression.

Studies of adults have shown that those who are more empathic tend to be happier. For one thing, they’re motivated to do things for others and helping others increases their own happiness. On the opposite end of the spectrum, people who remain preoccupied with themselves tend to be unhappy.

Oh, I guess our species isn't supposed to be in a state of fractured, perpetual civil war after all.

Whether altruism is spiritual or genetic or whatever, fact is it EXISTS. And I'm sad for those that haven't encountered it.

That is nothing but coaching students for tests that reward the learned behaviour. It proves nothing. You cannot draw any reliable conclusions from it. Sadly it is all too prevalent as a substitute, not a supplement for quality teaching. The real way to improve literacy and numeracy, to motivate and empower, is to provide teaching by specialists and to allow failure.

This isn't about behaviour. Empathy isn't a Skinnerian response. It would personally annoy me if someone dropped me a pellet everytime I felt the urge for a group hug. Razz

Empathy as a "program" in school? Come on.

You can imagine the teacher's admonishing tone, "Why aren't you participating, Jeremy? Come on, share."

Parents are increasingly failing to do their job so it is left to these pathetic box ticking exercises. And a score or less formally, some indication of satisfactory completion is a pellet as far as I am concerned. It is jumping through hoops, reward for accepting the rules of the game and playing. Meanwhile, the competition is not wasting time on this crap.

Empathy is a skill. The best at it are successful, often across the board. So if the competition isn't wasting time on it, you've got an edge, if you are.

Empathy is a skill that is essential to success? Tell that to all the wealthy scumbags who doublecrossed and ass kissed their way to the top while shitting on everyone beneath them.

Any successful person who shows this so-called "empathy" has ulterior motives. They give to charity because it's a tax write-off or for positive public relations, they're nice to you because they want to sell you something, etc. They're full of crap.
