Or wahtever... You're rich. Mega wealthy. Unlimited funds...

What is your idea of the ultimate post peak get-away?

I'm thinking convert a remote played-out oil or gas rig into post peak heaven. Complete with a refinery, machine shop, generators, solar, wind, gardens and livestock. A few hundred tons of rich soil, several high-speed modified attack boats, and mounted 50 caliber guns on deck. Exocet missile banks, and long range and targeting radar.

A library of every book movie album etc...

And since it's on a tall rig... plenty of bungee jumping supplies.

So post peak survivors, let's have it... your ultimate peak solution.

This is a great question to ponder and fun but I always hang up on where.

I'm left wanting several places and the means to travel to them at least initially.

I have seen several Minuteman silos converted to homes… hmmm.

Gates could probably make a little retreat on the moon – hard to get to by MZB’s

I’m thinking a very inconspicuous farm in the Midwest with lots of scatterguns and other stuff between big towns and you. Most everything you need growing out the back door.

Oh yea! That’s where I’m moving!

Well strange as it may sound, Cuba might be an interesting place for me.

It certainly isn't the best place to be at the moment. However they have managed to build an economy on virtually nothing. If peakoil hits it will be one of the places which is the least affected.

The same is true for the African countries. But compared to most of them Cuba is a paradise.

I think money and wealth are going to bring you trouble, not salvation. In times of economic despair, the masses usually demand a share of the wealth of the ultrarich. If the masses posses nothing, possession itself becomes illegal. (The Robin Hood syndrome).

Since the rich are usually not inclined to share and lose their position, they often find their heads on the chopping block on some public square.

Pops-

10 acre woodlot
10 acre pasture
10-15 in tillage
3-4 orchard
1 acre house/buildings/improvents

Based on those alotments, and assuming the post-peak lifestyle is mostly working this farm, in other words you are not driving to a job too, how many people do you think it could conservatively sustain? And do you think it is too big for just two people to manage?

I like the size (gotta have a mule too lol) it's about what I also hope to own, barring mega luck. But occasionally 40 acres seems scary and I revert to the one acre mini farm idea. Which is unlikely to allow running water frontage(somewhat of a dream of mine)

I have an overvalued home in a high-end second home market(but not for long) that I am considering selling before the bottom falls out- we just don't know where to go next- I've lived here since early childhood.

I've been looking at Central Maine whose prices are still, sorta, less than obscene.

Actually guest, I just made an offer on that place! My home in Central Ca has skyrocketed as well so the place in MO will be free and clear.

We had an opportunity to only purchase the home and 20, but that fact that the soil is merely adequate made me decide to purchase the additional 20 even though it reduced my cash.

The Amish family that lives there now raise 25 head of cattle with hay and forage grown on the place, all their own produce and even a few fish from the pond. The 2 of them support 7 growing kids and themselves with no electricity and only horse powered implements. They also makes some cash by repairing others' equipment and selling produce from the house.

Now, I’m not Amish and I don’t have 7 kids, but it is an indication of what can be done on that place at least. In the short term I will work from home via the Internet and learn the ropes. Worse comes to worse I can provide at least some support to my kids in the way of passing along what I’ve learned – best I can do.
