Like I've said several times ethanol is a part of the problem but also people in China and india have more money and are spending more on food and there have been some crop failures and the cheap dollar too.
I've also worried at the idea of the consumers of feed - poultry, pork, dairy and beef getting squeezed to the point they go ***-up. Last I looked the profit on a hog was minus $30, cattle are getting there and the only thing underpinning the dairy market are exports of chees and such according to a friend on a large dairy co-op board.
But here is a new worry, ag debt is up $8b this year, the fourth record setting year. Farmers are battling investors to expand their acreage and so the price is increasing. They need new and bigger equipment to work the increased acreage and of course they need ever more operating capitol.
All on a bet the prices stay high.
But of course, just like the screams to kill the oil company subsidies you can bet the next farm bill will hear lots of the same about ethanol. If that prop is pulled it could be just like the ag bust of the '80s.

If there are actual shortages and food riots in poor countries now, it feels pretty uncomfortable to think what life in most 3rd world countries will be like when food is rationed in rich countries that can afford it longer.

As far as the question of how long we've had a pantry, my Mom and Dad were raised in the depression and my Grand Mom on a homestead in the Indian Territories so I can't remember a time when we didn't have a larder.
When I left home I was in construction and if I hadn't stocked up when there was work I and later we, would have been pretty hungry when there was none. It's just natural to us and has absolutely no negative impact on our enjoyment of life.
Americans aren't gonna starve anytime soon but I'll bet a dollar they will be paying quite a bit more than they are gripping about right now and in the worst case I described in the other food thread they will be paying a whole lot more. And in some cases there will be periods when some things just won't be available.
And I never bet more than a dollar...

JL that's really all I'm agitating for is people to realize there will be periods when stuff can't be had at any price and a little stock is no problem.
I was just finishing a construction job in Ventura, CA the night of the Northridge earthquake. Luckily we had fueled up the night before so were heading out and there was not a convenience store or gas station open for 50 miles up the coast - no power = no cash register = no food or fuel. _________________ Make a plan and work it:

Why can't they just buy a bunch of American butter? We've got plenty of the stuff.
It seems a little odd that a rich country like Japan doesn't have corporations capable of calling in an order from another country.
This seems to me like hyperbole.
A small temporary shortage of a particular item does not mean the entire country is out of butter or that Japan is on the verge of starvation.
