Like the illusion of Wall Street, with its vast and powerful investment banks, now shuttered, China too is an illusion perpetuated by the Globalists that gave us the 15,000 mile Caesar salad, poisoned cat food and lead based paint on babies' pacifiers. Like the illusion that money would come from thin air to always push housing prices higher, China has spent a generation pursuing its illusion. Pursuing an unattainable dream to be like the West, while 6000 years of its carefully shepherded top soil blows into the sea.

I sell them some butter. Send me a Honda Fit+Toyota Yaris+Japanese sex slave and i'll send back a couple of sticks of Wisconsin's finest butter.

I'd like to get John Denver's perspective on this.

Well, I'm certainly not unhappy at this prospect. The story behind each individual case of death by starvation/disease is sad, but as Stalin said "A single death is a tragedy, a million deaths is a statistic".

I thought Stalin said that a million deaths were a sanitation problem.

Like I've said several times ethanol is a part of the problem but also people in China and india have more money and are spending more on food and there have been some crop failures and the cheap dollar too.

I've also worried at the idea of the consumers of feed - poultry, pork, dairy and beef getting squeezed to the point they go ***-up. Last I looked the profit on a hog was minus $30, cattle are getting there and the only thing underpinning the dairy market are exports of chees and such according to a friend on a large dairy co-op board.

But here is a new worry, ag debt is up $8b this year, the fourth record setting year. Farmers are battling investors to expand their acreage and so the price is increasing. They need new and bigger equipment to work the increased acreage and of course they need ever more operating capitol.

All on a bet the prices stay high.

But of course, just like the screams to kill the oil company subsidies you can bet the next farm bill will hear lots of the same about ethanol. If that prop is pulled it could be just like the ag bust of the '80s.

That's when people will feel a real pinch...

If there are actual shortages and food riots in poor countries now, it feels pretty uncomfortable to think what life in most 3rd world countries will be like when food is rationed in rich countries that can afford it longer.

I thought Finland was a first world western European country with:
1) universal health care
2) high speed trains that run 300km/hr
3) free college tuition
BTW liberals in America like to give us a REALLY hard time for not providing this. Smile

Don't worry, we won't be providing all that after awhile either. It's going to be the same all over Europe. Health care will be elementary and expensive, trains will run on wood/coal at 40 km/h, and there will most definitely be no free tuition in the few colleges there'll be left.

As I said in an earlier post, things are getting tough here in the US. No need to look at poor shitty countries like Haiti to see hunger. There is plenty of it here.

Check out this story that I caught on NPR yesterday about the state of US food banks. The crap is hitting the fan much quicker than I could have expected. I need to go out and get some food and maybe invest in a firearm or two.

Food-Bank Organizers Face Shortages

Global food shortages and a faltering U.S. economy are hurting food banks. Leaders in the food bank community are finding creative ways to cope. Two food-bank organizers discuss their approach to the problem.

While you are at it, invest in some gun safety and learn about your state laws regarding self defence. If a conceal carry permit is allowed, check into that. Definately take a class on the legal aspect, you won't do yourself or you family any good behind bars for something you should have known ahead of time.

I went to another supermarket, and then another, and there was no butter at those either. Everywhere I went there were notices saying Japan has run out of butter
<snip>
The latest — a 30% increase this month — has given rise to speculation that Japan, which relies on imports for 90% of its annual wheat consumption, is no longer on the brink of a food crisis, but has fallen off the cliff.

Japan's hunger becomes a dire warning for other nations

Actually this is nothing to get upset about, but it is something to watch. What about the time Johnny Carson said there was going to be a toilet paper shortage in California... guess what Californians did?

I won't be all that concerned until it starts happening in other locations on an ongoing basis and for something other than just rice. Now if rice, flour, and beans started to disappear on a regular basis in several parts of the country for extended periods of time, THEN it's time to pull out the leathers.

I agree, don't read any of the links provided unless they come from the local broadcast and don't plan beyond the next TV Guide.

When the shelves get bare is surely the time to stock up a little.

Makes sense to me.

Pops, there is a medication available for what ails you:

Laughing I love it.

No Pops, you misunderstand. I'm simply saying that "the end is not here". Am I stocked up? About 8 months worth... do I have enough ammo? For the most part, yeah, and I'm fixing my deficiencies on that. I am worried that I can't find a single person in my neighborhood with a gun.

I'm saying as a doomer, I believe we have time and that the real panic will not kick in until what I said comes to pass. Then it's time to lock the doors and board up the windows.

I'm not yelling the sky is falling, just saying it looks like rain so get out your raincoat. Interesting you haven't seen much change in the world in the last few years.

As far as the question of how long we've had a pantry, my Mom and Dad were raised in the depression and my Grand Mom on a homestead in the Indian Territories so I can't remember a time when we didn't have a larder.

When I left home I was in construction and if I hadn't stocked up when there was work I and later we, would have been pretty hungry when there was none. It's just natural to us and has absolutely no negative impact on our enjoyment of life.

Americans aren't gonna starve anytime soon but I'll bet a dollar they will be paying quite a bit more than they are gripping about right now and in the worst case I described in the other food thread they will be paying a whole lot more. And in some cases there will be periods when some things just won't be available.

And I never bet more than a dollar...

Oh, and this site has been live for a tad over 4 years.

JL that's really all I'm agitating for is people to realize there will be periods when stuff can't be had at any price and a little stock is no problem.

I was just finishing a construction job in Ventura, CA the night of the Northridge earthquake. Luckily we had fueled up the night before so were heading out and there was not a convenience store or gas station open for 50 miles up the coast - no power = no cash register = no food or fuel.

Why can't they just buy a bunch of American butter? We've got plenty of the stuff.

It seems a little odd that a rich country like Japan doesn't have corporations capable of calling in an order from another country.

This seems to me like hyperbole.

A small temporary shortage of a particular item does not mean the entire country is out of butter or that Japan is on the verge of starvation.

It merely means that Japan's grocers need to work a little harder to secure supply contracts.

My thinking is a lot depends on the reaction of each society. Is yours a stoic lot? Will you smooth out any bumps yourself? Shortages of everything were common in the Second World and life went on for decades.
