We are entering the stage where ideology and education about sustainability and living within carrying capacity will be augmented by the reality of identifiable consequences of our overshoot. External consequences like the peaking and decline of below ground energy and commodity resources, above ground environmental degradation of our climate, soils, fisheries and climate will have a profound effect on our culture. 2009 is the year when we start to feel it.

I had read this somewhere, but it makes sense. I was telling my wife yesterday, if you think $4 is expensive for a gallon of gas, then you (wife) go push our car 35 miles and tell me how long it takes you. The gasoline (1 gallon) will do it in 30 minutes without breaking a sweat.

$4 for 28000 calories isn't too bad.

I just saw a headline proclaiming record fuel prices in Sweden. 13 SEK/liter (95 octane) works out at around 8.4 $US/gallon.

I'm guessing there are a lot of bikes in Norway?

Read that food banks are way down on donations, while need is way up. People are putting gas in their tanks instead of donating (CNN article).

Gas was still 3.49 here yesterday. I biked to the grocery store and bought bananas. Hauling 9 pounds of groceries in a back pack in 78F heat 9 miles (18 round trip) isn't fun.

Still not noticing a lot of biking yet.

Thinking about getting a locking gas cap for the car.

I went to work on my bike today. First time since last year's summer. Better to work on my condition again in case I'll have to do this every day.

at my location, you add about 75 cents to the wholesale price, and that's where the retail price is headed. so where i'm at, gasoline currently retails for $3.499 and i expect it to go to $3.75 or so.

I don't recall any of us asking you to feel sorry for us.

I've had one on my car the last ten years or so. Almost every car has one. Then again, gas has been at $7-8 a gallon here for years.

Have you heard about the thieves that crawl under your car and drill a few holes into your gas tank and drain the gas out that way ?

Exactly what I was going to say Arm... Best to leave the locking cap off and just lose the gas vs. replacing the fuel tank.

Gas here in south Indiana is $3.65, but in Louisville, KY it's $3.75. Both are up $.35 from last week. Gas station guys say $4.00 soon.
