Like the illusion of Wall Street, with its vast and powerful investment banks, now shuttered, China too is an illusion perpetuated by the Globalists that gave us the 15,000 mile Caesar salad, poisoned cat food and lead based paint on babies' pacifiers. Like the illusion that money would come from thin air to always push housing prices higher, China has spent a generation pursuing its illusion. Pursuing an unattainable dream to be like the West, while 6000 years of its carefully shepherded top soil blows into the sea.

As a 25 year old I'm wondering whether other people in this age group are prepping for the things to come. How do you guys see the events unfolding for our generation specifically? And what is everyone doing right now to improve their situation?
20 years old myself, i have made several preparations for a (short-term) emergency in my parents house. Nobody in my direct environment seems to feel the need to prepare for such an event. Without talking about it or telling them i made the necessary preparations.
Our generation is going to have to work very hard in the near future. For ourselves aswell as for our baby-boom parents. Am still hoping that won't be necessary though as i don't look forward to living with my parents for very long. As for making my situation better... there's nowhere to go really that would improve my situation in the long run. Therefor i'm going with life as usual (while still making little preparations that would be very helpful in a short-term crisis) and just hope i'll end up somewhere good. All in all, i'm making life as good as possible for as long as it lasts. _________________ The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.

23 here as a grocery truck driver. Not much I can do about planning for the future except staying away from debt. If it's anywhere as bad as this forum says it will be, then the only secure jobs will be within the government.

I'm 27 and I work for a telecom company in Canada
I've managed to get myself 2 acres of land. I'm hoping to build on it in a few years.
I'm also getting married this year to a wonderful person, who herself believes very much in a "back to the land" movement .. she's not very much peak oil aware but she is at least wanting to move back to the land.
I think the best move someone our age could make is to get out of debt. Live below your means and get land and a small house built on it ... then move towards self sufficiency

I'm 19, so I'll be there in a little while...
I think that peak oil will make for some tough going, but will give us a few opportunities unprecedented in recent history:
1) Depending on just how severe the ultimate mess ends up being, we may have the benefit of youth and the chance to build up a base from scratch. In the latter half of the twentieth century, almost anything of consequence that a person did was pretty much within the bounds of a particular educational/economic paradigm. If that paradigm is weakened, our generation will be educated, healthy, and the best positioned of all to take advantage of a clean slate in which to pursue our own ideas. This is of course assuming that there are leaders ready to take some sort of helm.
2) A number of entrepreneurial opportunities will be created. If almost everything now depends on oil, and that basis becomes unworkable, then a whole lot of industries will be looking for innovative solutions. The demand for ideas will be huge. The scale may be small, but that works to our benefit: creative people all over the world will have a local stage on which they can work, again something for which our generation will be well positioned.
How to prepare for all of this? I really only see two things: education and maintaining good health. It's very difficult to predict precisely which asset classes might allow us to carry a bit into the future with us. Good health will never fail you, and right now we still have young bodies that we can basically maintain with some effort, as opposed to much older people who will face this battle in a period of physical decline. Education, too, is widely available. And I don't mean just degrees.
There's one other 'asset' that has helped just through just about every period of human history, regardless of circumstance. That is a circle of friends, family, and acquaintances. Frankly, the stronger and wider your relationships, the more likely that you will have access to whatever might be scarce in the future, and the more easily you will be able to apply whatever skills that you have.

20 year old here, but I hardly identify as a POer. I'm here for the Planning For The Future subforum only, as I want to discuss gardening and animal husbandry and home construction and water purification and food storage and on and on with people who have similarly broad worldviews.
Just thought I'd report in, since I appear to be settling in here.

Im 27 and became PO "aware" about 4 months ago. I've been wondering myself what it will be like for our age group. So far, I have been convincing my family and loved one's around me about the future and reading a lot of books. I'm joining a CSA this summer and have started a group in my town focusing on paths to local sustainability. Being in college is turning out to be a blessing and a burden at the same time. I really wish I had my full time job back to help me make more preps but I have been able to raise some awareness and do some good around my campus. PO has shown me that I need to change my major and I am changing over to some sort of environmental science from business. Recently I have had this thought:
With the airlines having so much trouble and cross continental flight uncertain in the future, I ask myself, if I could travel to one last place in the world (knowing it would never be a possibility again) where would I go?

You might look into a degree in an oil industry field such as Petroleum Land Management/Energy Management, Petroleum Geology, Petroleum Engineering, or Geophysics
