Meanwhile, keep watching for shortage reports, because we should start seeing some sneak in this week, if our doom-o-meter is calibrated correctly.

God, stay where you are at! Australia has lots of resources and is kind of isolated compared to the northern hemisphere. In fact, I wouldn't doubt that the coming depression will be primarily a northern hemisphere thing. Australia might actually profit from it all.

this is exactly my poinz of view kingcoal! This is what all Europeans missing here but what's actually the advantage of Australia - far away from everything.
UK is maybe one of the baddest places (sorry) because of probable sudden climate changes and sea level rises.

Australia is already suffering water issues due to droughts. If climate change is as bad as you think it is, then much of Australia’s costal cities will be wiped out. The rest of the continent is a wasteland.

The UK has the North Sea, which will be producing some Gas and Oil for sometime, it has the best renewable energy sources in the world, which, when developed, could power all its energy needs and export some to the continent, it is isolated from the European continent, and only some parts will be at risk from sea level rises. Much is way above sea level. It has enough arable land to meet its own food supplies and a great climate for growing food, even if the temperature rose significantly. It will also always have trade options with Canada for energy and the US for food, which will be uninterrupted after a short trip across the Atlantic.

It is better than any developing country and I can think of many rich countries it is better than including Germany, Japan and Italy.

Australia is by no means a land of safety in regards to peak oil. It has the same inefficient infrastructure that the US has. Has a relatively hostile climate. A weak military force. Is very exposed to sea level rises given most of the populated areas are on the coast. I would defiantly prefer to be in the UK than Australia.

If you want to be safe move to Canada. It has the best prospects. Good climate, vast sways of land, lots of resources and protected by the US and Europe. I am not sure the US would risk war with China is they invaded Australia, but if they invaded Canada it would be a different story.

We can't just go were we want, but my poor husband does not like his work place, he might find something else her but, Australia is not the center of the science world.
There would be possibilities in the UK or Switzerland, however I DON'T want to move and our kids think of themselves as Australian (they're not).
In the UK there would be something in Edingbourg (never know how to spell this) and, maybe in Glasgow. But both are big cities, and I would like to know if there are houses with decent gardens (say 600 m˛ to much better, an acre in a train-commutable distance? We don't have heaps of money, but would be able to pay 150K pounds, mortgage included.

Anyway, I hope everything turns out fine and we must not move from here, I really fear if the crisis hits and you are in the middle of nowhere... And beginning a new garden in a new climate takes us at least a year or two.

well we are along way from crisis so i would not get worried yet.

Issues with moving to Scotland, the weather is terrible and house prices are still very high, even if they are starting to fall.

Australia might not be the best place but there are a lot worse places.

Australia does have an inefficent infrasturucture and water problems so i would insure you are in a good location from these points of view. Close to ports and railway terminals. Close to areas where food production is high. Not isolated.
