For me, the most helpful thing is to do work on our place. I guess that falls in the "preps" category. With the gardening, it is enjoyable and can seem a bit frivolous, planting flowers. But I always have at the back of my mind the usefulness or edible qualities of the plants, and how they will do with global warming.... _________________ No original ideas are contained in this post.

I agree with some of the other posters that it's hard to look to the future without thinking about oil (and other resources) depletion and other problems facing us in these times. I don't let these things dominate my life but rather do what I can to improve my family's position. I find that I'm working harder at my job so that I can pay for more of our necessities.
I find being future-oriented helps, though, oddly enough. I just set goals and do my best to meet them and plan as many enjoyable activities and events as time allows. I think it's important to not obsess about news stories or one crisis or another. Been there, done that. I remember a while back when I had to check on the stock market news every day. Not any more. I think it's easy for some people to worry so much about what may happen that they forget to live their life.
My next-door neighbor is having some serious heart problems right now. He is one of my favorite people, and I am very concerned about him and his wife. To me, things like this reinforce what I value most about life and push worldly concerns a little out of my focus.

This may sound odd but I like to unwind by fixing barb wire fence. Lots of walking, hard work, fresh air and limited conversation. Plus I know I am being proactive. I get irritable if I go a few weeks w/o walking our fences. It's hard to describe but I'll try. Walking fence, cutting up trees and splicing wire is kind of like playing Tetris. Use to be a pain, but after 27 years of walking the fence line it's relaxing. _________________ In other words, it's a huge sh*t sandwich, and we're all gonna have to take a bite.-from Full Metal Jacket

I really don't have the "doom" mentality, but I do acknowledge that "peak oil" will have consequences like fuel and food will become more expensive.
But in the grand scheme of things "we" in the industrial world have it pretty good relative to 5/6 of the rest of humanity. Even the poor in the United States, don't have to face the challenges of destitute in the slums of south america, asia and africa.
Getting back to the guestion, how do I take my mind off peak oil, well one good distraction I found (being an airport bum) is for me to drive down to the airport, hop in my plane and drill holes in the sky and look down on all the clogged roadways and crowded developments here in southern california, and think boy am I glad I have the means and opportunity to see the world from up high....

How do you take your mind off of the impending doom?

I like to cut wood, or do something that takes my mind off the problem.
I just got my bike out. That's a great way to take my mind off of peak oil. Zooming around in the sun. That's fun! _________________ Deep in the mud and slime of things, even there, something sings.

I never forget PO. To get my mind off it, I deepen myself into it until it becomes a natural part of my life, and I become numb to it. PO? Nope, never heard of it.
I go shooting.
I work to leech from the corporates, and channel to preps.
I get ready to plant. And it's about to be winter (best time to get the soil ready)
I prep my sons as best as possible. We're benchmarking against some of the best the natives here have and I'd say we're a few steps ahead child for child. (understatement)
The prius is getting a lot of attention now, and I'm looking to load up a 2nd gen-1/2 one as well.
I watch the real estate like a hawk, and watch the auction rates fail, and get ready to pounce when the failure rates are way high enough for block sales that are 5c to the dollar. We're talking rural blocks here, so I walk the grounds (5-12ha lands with gullies and water and plains).
I make friends. Some I discard (real losers), some I do all to form a bond.
My bug out kit now caters for 5 days out for a family of 4.
Renting no matter what.
Watching like a hawk on some of the garage sales my neighbourhood and nearby sub-rural folks putting up -- quite a few trying to liquidate stuffs besides their land, and jobless at the same time.
Building my network of warlord wannabes. I have the means to profit from other losses, they know the lay of the land. <-- just an alternative in case peaceful communities don't exist here. Note : police are outnumbered 510 to 1. In a way it's hedging my bets : violent bleed off -- we'll scrounge around. Peaceful bleed off -- we've got friends and the means to buy.
Nope. I don't forget PO because I *AM* PO. _________________ regards,

Thats because everyone can sew shoes, but not everyone's smile can sell them. Sounds totally fare to me.
