They often have fences around them. I could see them converted to
gated camps (police or FEMA controled). Much easier to control then
a suburb without power or a city block. Could make a nice doomer
camp too. Just add a few buckets, a shower tent and tents in each
block for sheltered sleeping and you have a very secure camp. Plus
if people were working on farms outside the camp they could lock up
their stuff. It could certainly work...

One of my best friends was down and out in Tucson and used to store all his stuff in storage like that. When I would go with him to the storage facility, I noticed there were several people living out of them, in addition to my friend. They would hang out in the shed during the day, then go somewhere else after business hours. Some of the fancier ones have electricity and climate controls. Whether you can live there depends on the owner, of course.

A good point, right now there are people living in storage units.
thought about it when I first go laid off. I figure I put my bed and
dresser in there. it had an outlet for my tv, small fridge and a
microwave. I have a gym membership and was planning on using
that for shower and when nature called. The cheapest climate
controlled storage I found with an outlet is around $170. Meant
saving on cable since no cable can be run there. about $700
savings on rent. I would probably end up spending more on food
though since I would have to eat out more.
If I lose my temp gig, I may still do it.
I thought about it, but here in Texas, you cant live in them. I had
always thought about living in a shed though. I know I can get
electricity and plumbing for it, but I dont have enough room in one
for all of my crap.
I've seen people do this (well not in person, stories of them), and it
tends to be illegal in most states missing the most necessary items
like water, and heat.
That being said, I'm unsure if once you take possession if squaters
rights take place and if they have to evict you as a rental tenant, or
commercial tenant. Would be interesting to find out.

In 20 years working in commercial storage, years when she has
also had to work nights waitressing at the Golden Corral to help
support her children, Robin Lawrence has seen lots of people living
in storage sheds.
"Sometimes they can fix them up really nice," said Lawrence, who
works at Economy Storage in Waldorf. They might add insulation,
carpet on the floor, a bed, a rack for their clothes, a television, a hot
plate, maybe even a little grill out back. "It's just like a little
efficiency, but without running water."
A 30-year-old man was found living in a locker at Central Self
Storage -- with the knowledge of the manager -- and was arrested,
along with three other people, for being under the influence of
methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia, according
to police reports. The arrests were made after the police were
tipped off by a local mother who discovered her 16-year-old
daughter was hanging out with her friends in a rented storage
locker at the site and allegedly using drugs.

I've heard of this before. Not sure what locally you could do. They are really cheap around here, although the ones i'm thinking of don't have electricity that i know of.
I think from April to Nov a person could make a nice tent or a small camper home. You can find a nice campground not far from town and you can pay by the month. I actually know of a guy who has lived at a campground, and he said it was the cheapest, best living ever (it was right on the river, he had a boat). I just looked up the current rates and a seasonal fee WITH electricity would run you $1200 (April 15-Oct 30). That isn't bad. You could leave your boat right in the water and in October you could bow hunt not far from camp. A shower costs .25 cents. I'm guessing they have internet, but i bet its extra. Assuming you're talking about regular campgrounds out in the woods (and not RV parking lots), there's often a limit to the number of days you can stay. Out here, it's 14 days. You'd have to move from camp to camp. If more than a few people got wind of the idea, I imagine the forests would be full of trash and tree monkeys. Your nomadic route would be hijacked by an influx of new squatters.

AFAIK, there's no such storages on Costa Rica... are you comfortable living on such a militarized country (this related to fascist imaginary camps based on this storage)? ...even Italy is looking too (potentialy?) fascist now, the "italians vrs others" talking of socio-economical entitlements is sick (heard on RAI TV).
...relative to other countries, Costa Rica is a paradise... and no Maras (criminal very violent gangs) here yet! ...but I don't talk much about this, because this country can only mantain a certain quantity of population... _________________ anagami.net
