Truckers protest high gasoline prices

Quote:
WASHINGTON (AP) — Dave Gares, an independent truck driver since 1974 who hauls mostly soft drinks these days, never dreamed he'd be paying more than $4 per gallon for diesel.

It takes 220 gallons to fill up his tractor-trailer rig, which gets a little over six miles per gallon on the road. It costs Gares up to $1,400 to fill up, with the added cost of fuel additives to boost his truck's mileage. He said he has to absorb the increases to stay competitive.

"You can't charge it back to the shipper, so it comes out of your own wallet," said Gares of Lebanon, Pa., one of more than 100 truckers who drove to Washington on Monday to demand changes from Congress. "Now you have to start looking at how to cut back."

The guy gives you a clue as to what is happening in the macro right now. He says he simply cannot pass on the extra cost, that is because there are just too many trucking companies.

It is like the airlines right now.

I'm not without sympathy but they seem to be as clueless as real estate agents. Blaring horns on a freeway is not going to make light sweet crude oil jump out of the ground.

Please don't tell me they expect government to solve their problems. I always get scarred when people do that.

Yes, I really don't know what the hell they expect to get out of the government.

Maybe if 'dem truckers did'nt spend so much time prowling the trucks stops for misfortunate youth they would have a little more money in their pockets.

After realizing the scuzzy underbelly of long haul trucking I think we should trade it all in for some national dedicated maglevs to regional hubs and make sure that every driver get's home to his family every night. Then we would also eliminate the driving 20 hours straight as well as the sexploitation of youth fleeing abusive homes. It's a win/win.

Hows that sound?

Of course that's what they expect. That's what they (along with everyone else) have been conditioned to expect.

Hillary Clinton keeps on "hinting" that if you vote for her she'll give you universal health care......for free too!

There's a lot of "self proclaimed intellectually enlightened" people who think if a black man or a women was in charge somehow the world's problems would be solved.
People want CHANGE....ohhh they'll get it all right. good and plenty. Smile

All of the EU countries have universal healthcare in one form or another, they don't seem ot be going belly up. What problem do we have with allowing 50 million uninsured American's to get a little healthcare?

America the welfare state. Not hardly, America the throne of social darwinism. Survival of the fittest, but oops the biggest and brightest did'nt hedge its bets properly against oil, climate change, or the raging immorality that is eating it alive like a cancer.

Survival of the fittest.

English trucker revolting.

Quote:
Lorry drivers protesting against the "rocketing" price of diesel are heading in a convoy towards central London.

Dozens of lorries will converge on Park Lane in protest at a 30% rise in diesel pump prices over the past year.

In there case though there is something the government can do about tax.

Sort off. (should this be its own thread?)

You must of mistaken us for the French. We do NOT feel the need to apologize for creating a society where 10% of the population owns 90% of all wealth!

Americans actually have a very comfortable relationship with (accumulating money and generating profits), it's just sex that we have a difficulty dealing with. Embarassed

I found truckers driving around protesting high fuel costs ... somewhat ironic.

Maybe if they bought a decent truck or didn't dress it up like a christmas tree they would get a decent mileage.

6 miles a gallon is shameful. A modern tractor trailer combo would be able to get more than 9 miles out of a gallon.

This is funny, in the ironic way.

Though I wish were at the stage of I massive, angry demonstrations over food and energy costs, which lead to uncontrolled rioting, which lead to violence, which lead to military intervention against civilians. Over food, shelter and gas. In America.

If I were a trucker in times like these I would expect BushCo to go get our oil out of the mideast or whereever else it is and to do it fast!

If it comes from biofuels and people elsewhere go hungry? Too bad, the worlds over populated already, die-off is going to happen at some point. Truckers need their jobs
[/if I were]

as it all goes down it’ll go down with everyone protecting their own.

Maybe 7.5. More than 9? I don't think so. I just talked to the expert yesterday - trucking broker friend.
