Hoarding is exactly what the government is doing right now by filling the SPR, and frankly it's the best thing that could happen. It drives prices up. High prices encourage demand destruction. They also finance new well development. The hoarded oil gives us a buffer to fall back on once shortages become more prevalent. High prices are what we need in order to adapt to what's coming, and the sooner they happen, the better.

Soybean cooking oil was $28.85/5 gallons US at Sam's Club yesterday. A friend and I were wondering how long before it's cheaper to fill up the diesel at the grocery? That's $5.77 for soy oil, vs $4.10 for diesel at the moment here.

It's already cheaper to fill up at the grocery store in most of Europe. A fuel station is more convenient though. And most cars cannot handle pure vegetable oil.

Sure you can drive a diesel on vegetable oil. You need to put in some white spirit to make it work.

TopGear had a bit on it a year ago:

There were new diesel shortages reported in Uganda and oil producer Yemen today. Unusual diesel demand is still being reported by Chile and England.

These problems have lead the US to continue to export diesel - even while diesel hits record prices almost daily.

If the oil workers strike in Nigeria doesn't end soon, we will be seeing even higher diesel prices.

Quote:
NEW YORK, April 28 (Reuters) - New York Harbor ultra low sulfur diesel and jet fuel differentials rose two cents each on Monday morning amid strong bidding as Europe and South America continued to demand cargoes, dealers said.

Players said they expected continued strength in the Harbor distillate market all week.

Ineos' oil Grangemouth refinery in Scotland shut down last week due to a worker strike, adding to European refinery outages and maintenance that has cut into distillate stocks. Meanwhile, a shortage of natural gas in Chile has triggered massive increases in that country's demand for foreign diesel.

Diesel popped back up to $4.29/gal over the weekend here. How long until the independent truckers start quitting en masse so that the few holdouts can charge more?

Front-month heating oil over $3.50, for I believe the first time. Unfortunately, future months (next winter) are already $3.55-$3.56.
