The post-peak oil, post-housing bust economy is already driving most crazy, and we won't even get to the food riot stage for maybe two more years.

Do daily news influence your preparing for the future?
So does it happen to me. Sometimes I think that the whole system will break down within month and we have to prepare in a hurry.
Then the dollar regains strength the oil price falls, and even that I know that on the long run it will be different, I think no it will last a while.
The difference between a while and short term is really big, as our decisions would be very different. Short term: stay were you are. Long term maybe moving my husband could maybe have a better paid job and we would by a bit more land. Short term: I know hoe long it takes to set up a garden, fruit trees to bare, have a social net.
My thoughts and actions for the future are really influenced by the daily news!

Not the short term MSM news, al.- that's all about selling commercials to folks who don't want to hear bad stuff.

I think about ag stuff for me and to relate here so I look at stuff directed at farmers - the commercials are directed at them and if they didn't watch the advertisers wouldn't.

The spaces between the lines of todays news are what I think about - I don't think I do it in a paranoid way but what parinoid person does?

Very Happy

alokin,
Oh yes, I watch daily news to learn current events, then try to project what they mean for our future. Like the past year's drought in the US, which caused famers to sell off a lot of cattle because of hay shortage. That meant that in about a year, beef prices would go up because the herd size would be smaller and fewer cattle would be available for market.

So, last November we bought a freezer, and filled it with cheap beef when it was plentiful. The same with pork because corn price was high and a lot of pigs were being sold because there was less profit in feeding them. Same deal.

Understanding something about PO gives us a longer term perspective for interpreting the news, so we can plan ahead. Our view is different than Joe 6 Pack, who sees a car commercial with big price cuts and thinks about buying a car, where we realize that the economy is poor, so it is not a good time to spend on a car. It's all in how you look at it.

A little off the subject, but I enjoy local history and would say it has some sway over how I prepare.

I watch CNBC daily and listen to it on XM radio.

It obviously helps me with my investments which ultimately helps my in buying larger items such as land now and in the future.

"Daily news", no. Internet news like we get here, yes. When I learned rice was going high I ordered 500# pronto. That was a month ago. My local merchant just today told me: "No rice or wheat available from my distributors AT ANY PRICE.
PS: The Mennonites I meet at the local store think I'm some kind of prophet because I always seem to know what's going on weeks or months before anyone else.

I pay attention to democracy now for world news reporting:

http://www.democracynow.org/

Hit Bloomberg for market and energy watching:

http://www.bloomberg.com/markets/commodities/energyprices.html

More world news here:

http://www.guerrillanews.com/

and of course PO dot com, the oil drum, and the energy bulletin.

And when I read and pay attention to the news sources I listed....It tells me one thing...get my crap together....it doesn't look good!
