Hoarding is exactly what the government is doing right now by filling the SPR, and frankly it's the best thing that could happen. It drives prices up. High prices encourage demand destruction. They also finance new well development. The hoarded oil gives us a buffer to fall back on once shortages become more prevalent. High prices are what we need in order to adapt to what's coming, and the sooner they happen, the better.

That's right.

Don't forget all the well-meaning people that will rationalize staying within such a power structure in order to stay alive.

Well, what is the point of being a PTB if not to assure your gene line? Isn't that the ultimate perk?

And if they are not selfish what will they do? Try to keep more people alive? That is a double edged sword: they may make a muck of it and kill people off unintentionally OR they may keep people alive, who will only create more people which makes the situation worse.

So I'm not to much on either feeling guilty or blaming. The things that are happening are generally beyond or intentional control. I am lucky to be born when and where I am and for that I am very, very, very grateful.

This all gets too much doom for me. I get to figure it this way. I have the right/obligation to take care of me and mine. To do that I need a stable community so I am willing to work on that. If I can create some island of stability then I have done a good thing, at least locally if not globally.

I'm not nearly as successful at this as I would like to be for various reasons.

That's an uncharacteristically pessimistic thought from you, Ludi.

Sorry. The invisible hand doesn't really care whether the 3rd world gets a chance to buy cars and big screen TVs before die-off kicks in.

Not really. Smile I'm basing it on what I see of current events. Yes, people's behavior may change dramatically tomorrow, but it is unlikely.
