Hoarding is exactly what the government is doing right now by filling the SPR, and frankly it's the best thing that could happen. It drives prices up. High prices encourage demand destruction. They also finance new well development. The hoarded oil gives us a buffer to fall back on once shortages become more prevalent. High prices are what we need in order to adapt to what's coming, and the sooner they happen, the better.

I was back in the innards of the grist mill restoration today, measuring for huge bearings and shaft keys that drive the grinding burrs. That put me in the crawl space, which has a spring of it's own, a slippery, muddy place, infested with creepy-crawlies and at least one copperhead snake that I saw. This lot of parts will finish the main drive train from the overshot wheel. The contractor is under a deadline, so I drove 30 miles to fetch a pair of 2 15/16" bearings for this smaller shaft to be hung on Monday.
Also got started on shafts and bearings for the 2 turbines, made about 1890 or so, now restored. They are fed with a wrought iron pipe, about 16" dia., and drive a vertical shaft up to the flour "bolter", corn sheller, and a 4 ft. dia grindstone for sharpening tools.
For those who haven't seen the earlier posts on this, the mill was originally capable of grinding flour for half of our county, and will do so post-peak with nothing but water power. The goal is to open for tourism by October this year.
Been buying scrap metal all week to have something my customers can afford to buy. New steel went up 19% week before last. _________________ Local fix-it guy..

It sounds like an incredible project Patience. How about some pictures. I'd love to check that out. Maybe even make it it's own thread. I envy those that have elevated water sources that allow this brilliant old technology.

These flashlights are fantastic. I bought one a while back for night fishing. They keep your hands free to tie knots and whatnot. The one I bought is really durable. I second the vote for the LED flashlights that you wear on your head. I have one that clips on the visor of a cap, and I use it all the time. This past winter, when I was milking after dark, that light saved me many broken toes on the way to the barn . The barn itself has electricity, but the trip there is awfully dark, and with hands full of milking bucket and supplies, the cap light came in very handy.
Yesterday I learned a LOT that will no doubt prove very useful in taking care of my goats in the future. We had new baby goats born, which is not new since they're the second set born this year - but what was new was that we almost had a trainwreck. Those babies were in such a hurry to be born that they both wanted to come out at once. Not happening. We had to reach in, reposition babies, and pull one. It was scary, but they and mama are doing fine. I have to go out and check on them early this morning, but as of 11:00 pm they were doing fine. Scared the poo out of me, though. Pics are on the "Goat and Sheep" thread.
One more doe to kid (any minute!) and then we're done with birthing goat babies for the year. I'll be so relieved when it's done.

Today I bought a Revex scythe and tried it out (after watching some internet videos). It's hard work, but I think it can get easier with practice. First time post
My sister has been preaching Peak Oil for a "while" to me, and I just "listened" to her. Now I know.
Today I worked on my solar hot water heater, still have about a weeks work on it. Our garden is going great. My pantry is about half what I want, water supply readly available. Plus purchased an 1100 gallon water tank for, surprisinginly 400.00, and it was only used as a water source for the previous owner.
Well that is my firs post but I have been "lurking" here for a while.
