because these generations are programmed to be better, go faster, work harder, consume more

With regard to the company that makes a number of trips to the port each day.

Is there a port rail shuttle and inland port terminal closer to your factory if there is would it make sence to collect from the inland port instead as it reduces the length of the truck trips.

For long distance shouldn't most of this cargo be going by rail from inland ports at every major city or transhipment point. Long distance truck cargo is a very wasteful and slower way of moving a large number of 40 foot containers from one city to another.

How much of the total container traffic goes by rail in north america?

consume more, go work faster, work harder longer, consume more much more than the previous generation. Progress. Razz

Good reply Pup55.

I drive a Chevy Metro and I drive 55 all the time on the highways and I accelerate very moderately. I always average about 45-46 mpg. It's amazing how many people get angry at me. I can see them in the rear view mirror get irritated. It's so obvious the huge problems we're facing in this country I could care less if I "inconvenience" some idiot behind me so I don't fret it one bit. Funny thing is, they will speed up, go around me almost recklessly making very fast lane changes, and then slam on their brakes or the red light anybody could see from a long ways back. Makes you want to give up on people and our chances regarding peak oil. Have humans evolved to be completely brain dead in just 150 years or so?

Of course, millions of individual automobiles is a huge problem no matter what model they are but in the meantime, how hard is it to slow down and save 10-20% fuel?

Not brain dead - just ridiculously self-centered.

For trucking companies that have a fairly limited range (i.e. not long haul), this simply makes sense economically with the price of fuel. the increase in travel time will be fairly minimal (~30 minutes for a 6 hour trip).

For long haul truckers reducing their speed limit starts to become less practical due to longer increases in delivery times. Though at some point in the future, maybe fairly soon, even they will have to follow suit in order to stay in business.

Just talked to a trucker today at the local gas station. He said, semi trucks are designed to cruise from 70 to 74 mph. 60 mph and mileage will be worse as they gotta run a lower gear and hills will kill ya.

If you are driving slower, isn't it going to take you longer to get there ? I never understood how that saves gas. I understand if you are constantly flooring it, but if you are doing a constant speed of 65-70, how is doing 55 going to save gas ?
In its most basic, kinetic energy is not proportional to velocity. It's the square of it.

So while moving at speed 1 you need 1 unit of energy, moving at speed 2 requires 4 units, speed 3 requires 9 units, speed 4 requires 16 units, speed 5 requires 25 units and so on.

In the real world things are far more complex than in these ivory tower calculations as you have to deal with drag and stuff.

The question will be if any of that savings goes to the trucker who is paid by the mile. After not getting paid waiting to be loaded, after not getting paid getting dinked around by as he/she gets sent to 2-3 docks, after not getting paid because the union forklift driver has already done his quota and the driver has to wait until the next morning to get loaded...

don't get me wrong, this is probably a good sign. Schnieder isn't going to do something that hurts them more at the pump and the physics is with the argument.

But as the system is engineered currently someone does pay a price. And that is the guy getting paid by the mile to drive from Miami to Tulsa.

They shouldn't, unless someone's been fiddling with fueling, which IME tends to happen. So, maybe it can, but for a properly setup truck, it should be able to cruise at 80mph on flat ground while still getting way better mileage at 55mph, at least according to Cummins.

I haven't a clue. It would seem 60 would be better, but This pro-trucker told me 70-74 is optimal. Maybe it depends on the rig.

Drew should know.

I'd go with the opinion of Cummins before I'd believe a driver, but like I said, if it's setup sub optimally, then maybe.

Back in the 80's they came up with aeroshells to go on the back of the trailer, basically make a tail sticking out like a teardrop that conversts turbulence into laminar flow. Cuts fuel use 20%

Problem is people in small cars would pull up into the overhang and draft off the truck, which lowers truck milage and is dangerous as hell if the truck hits the brakes for any reason.

Yes and no. Mileage would increase a lot for the car, and a wee bit for the truck, the gain btw is why drafting is such a big part of NASCAR, but it'd be a bug on the back if anything happened and the driver wasn't paying attention. Generally speaking a few car lengths back produces proportionally smaller benefits for both vehicles with less risk.
