Now it takes only 1 hour to go 20 miles rather than 1.5 hours.
Thankfully I dont have to travel the freeways to get to work.
However last Wednesday I took my wife to the airport around 7:30am on the 405 freeway and it was a nightmare. Even taking the 110 North to get on the 405 was packed and it is usually quick with little traffic.
When I can actually go the speed limit for more than 5 miles I will be impressed.

Traffic has been getting lighter. Was able to get from San Pedro to Pasadena and back to Torrance last Monday at 2:30 PM to 5:00 PM with a half hour taken to oogle all sorts of nice machine tools. Getting into DTLA for the concert/opera season is a lot easier now as well. The traffic knot that usually starts up way before Adams is now starting much closer to the 10 interchange. PCH through Lomita and Torrance is a lot easier going and the gridlock at Crenshaw is a lot lighter. The Starbucks coffee shops aren't so clogged by escrow agents, realtors and other economic hit-men either.
The 405 around La Tijera is still, well, lets just say I'll take surface streets...

Folks, I think it is starting to really hit the streets this time. And sounds like Prius is no big help.
And I couldn't be happier. Few things make me happier than driving on empty roads, instead of doing this "stopping" thing on a 65 mph freeway. I'd be willing to pay extremely high prices for gas (and drive sparingly) then deal with one of life's most hated miseries. If I had to deal with what some of those smucks do, spend an hour ten, hour twenty driving *each way* to work, I'd be getting to the wrist-slashing stage real quick...hehe. I honestly don't see how people do that, day in and day out...what's so hard about moving closer to one's job??
I do have to wonder, though, if this is due to the massive exodus out of southern California as opposed to higher gas prices, as I haven't noticed any difference in traffic levels here in the ATL (but then again, I don't commute, so what do I know...LOL). I'll continue to stick by my previous prediction that we won't see any sort of significant drop off in passenger car miles driven until we hit $7.00 per gallon, and even then, only by 10% or so. I think it'll take anywhere from $12 to $15 a gallon to really get the cars off the road in a big way. And I can't wait. _________________ Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide...

Well the difference is real estate and neighborhood safety. You can live farther out where a 3 bedroom 2 bath house costs $400,000 in a safe neighborhood, live closer to work where a 3 bedroom 2 bath house costs $300,000 in a bad neighborhood, or live close to downtown in lofts that costs anywhere from $1.2 million + in downtown LA. Its all about costs and safety.

I don't think there is a mass exodus out of southern California. Just people losing their homes and becoming renters instead of "homeowners".

I'm glad I'm not the only one who can't wait for $10-12/gallon gas. Aside from the misery and worldwide starvation that it'll cause, I think it'll be a good thing all around. Gas needs to be much more expensive for people to stop using it and for our "leaders" to begin the painful but necessary work of retooling or infrastructure for a post peak world.
As a bike commuter who marvels at the traffic reports on the radio as I cook dinner in the evening, I have to think all those people on the freeway really want things to change, too.

I somehow have the sneaking suspicion that we'll stop making fuel from food crops long before we reach that point. When people start getting hungry, some changes will be made, the easiest of which will be cutting out ethanol production, $12 gas be dammed.
And to respond to Joeltrout's reply to the costs of living in LA...who says one has buy a place to live in LA...renting is often far, far cheaper than carrying a huge mortgage (and don't get me started on those ARM timebombs).
Or better yet, do like I did, cash out in an expensive area (south Florida) and move to a cheaper area (Atlanta), where I have my 3/2, 3/4 wooded acre, with an easy ride downtown, even during rush hour. (!) Totally safe, too, a far cry from S. Fl was like. And when it's too expensive to drive, I'm within walking distance of 2 bus lines, walkable access to a comprehensive shopping center, and bicycle riding distance to the nearest rail station, which will get me just about anywhere in the city. Come on over fellas...the weather is just fine.

I agree 100% and tell most of my friends they need to do exactly that. Most of them are born and raised in the Los Angeles area and don't know what is "out there". Several are graduating college and are in the rat race in trying to find a decent job. They will probably be living in an apartment for the next 10 years because nobody can afford a "starter home" that cost $600,000. I am not even exaggerating. I have seen homes that are over $900,000 considered starter homes. It is crazy.
I tell young people to get out of Los Angeles and actually enjoy life.

I got the hell out of Boston and settled in Heaven in other words Houston.
Gotta love Houston.
As for ethanol prices, I have no hope from ethanol but the price link between oil and ethanol will not be broken and we will all starve. Since oil will continue increasing so as food.

In other words, you're saying "Go east, young man, go east." I certainly commend you for giving such good advice for those young folk...those kinds of prices for houses are just insane. :/
But that's the problem of the masses...they are just totally incapable of seeing "what's out there", namely the future. Imagine if more homebuyers paid attention to whether they could live without a car if they had to...this simply isn't possible in many of the newer suburbs of LA, Atlanta, or just about any other major American city. I do think that $7 on up to $12 gas is going to change how a whole lotta people are going to live, as the private automobile makes the transition from being a magic carpet to a ball-and-chain attached to the legs of your typical surbanite.

Considering that the price of oil has doubled and doubled again on just the tiniest spread between demand and supply (indicating its remarkable inelasticity), I do think we'll be hitting the double-digit range sooner than most people realize, once global oil production actually starts to decline (est. 2009-10). True demand destruction won't kick in until the cost of fuel is very, very expensive...might want to check into the concept of "giffen good" if you have the chance.
To believe that it'll be the year 2018 before the price of gas doubles or trebles again from current levels is highly optimistic, in my opinion. _________________ Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide...
