|
|
Just picked this up from Wikipedia:
---------------------------------
In a townhall session in Denver on May 2, 2008, McCain stated, "My friends, I will have an energy policy that we will be talking about, which will eliminate our dependence on oil from the Middle East that will -- that will then prevent us -- that will prevent us from having ever to send our young men and women into conflict again in the Middle East."[160]
-----------------------------------
There must be some mistake...I was under the impression that US troops were being sent to liberate those poor people. Now I gather the US will no longer be helping them out once they have their domestic energy security problems sorted out?
This coming from the Republican candidate for the next president of the USA? And they still try try to say that the Iraq War had nothing to do with energy?
Can anyone confirm this story with a link? |

Interesting...... I would love video or audio confirmation because this sounds a little sketchy.

| Quote: | ABC News’ Bret Hovell reports: Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) stepped away Friday from seeming to suggest earlier in the day that the Iraq War was motivated by U.S. dependence on foreign oil.
At a town hall meeting in Denver Friday morning, McCain was discussing the war in Iraq, and comments about how long the United States will be involved in that region, when he pivoted quickly to energy policy.
“And I just want to promise you this: My friends, I will have an energy policy, that we will be talking about, which will eliminate our dependence on oil from the Middle East,” McCain said. “That will prevent us from having ever to send our young men and women into conflict again in the Middle East.”
After landing in Phoenix later in the day, McCain told reporters that he was not saying that the conflict is about oil.
“We went to Iraq because we believed that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction and he was going to use them,” McCain said, reiterating what he has said before on numerous occasions.
He said that he was actually referring to the first Gulf War when he talked about how a new energy policy would allow the Untied States never to have to “send our young men and women into conflict again in the Middle East.”
“I was talking about that we had fought the first Gulf War for several reasons,” McCain said, noting primarily that Iraq had invaded its neighbor Kuwait.
“But also we didn’t want them to have control over the oil, and that part of the world is critical to us because of our dependency on foreign oil. And it’s more important than in any other part of the world.”
But he did not mention the first Gulf War during his town hall meeting in Denver. His comments then came in the context of a conversation about the latest Iraq struggle, and how his plans for Iraq differ from that of his Democratic opponents, who want to begin withdrawing troops quickly from Iraq.
“I believe that that would lead to catastrophe and chaos,” he said of the Democrats’ plans. “And that we would have the whole region, including the country, in such turmoil that we would be required to come back to the region.” |

Another scary thing about having a president who is John McCain's Age: Sometimes their mental gears slip and truth emerges fomr their lips at the most inopportune moments.
We can't have that in a politician or president. |

Eventually They will tell the truth.
This will happen either just when people are getting desperate over the oil prices or when they've finally had enough about the war. Then all you do is state things are bad but they'd be far worse if you hadn't invaded for that oil.
Everyone decides the war is necessary to keep those hummers idling in fast food drivethrough's and someone else's kids dying is an acceptable trade off for a hot big Mac.

I'm not sure about this, but afaik McCain was not involved in the decision to invade Iraq. So his story is irrelevant.
The problem is that if the US leaves Iraq, then the oil production in Iraq will collapse even further. The world can not afford to let that happen at this moment. |

Good to know there are fascists in the "United Kingdom of the Seven Netherlands" as well as in the "good ole U S of A". |

Good point.
So, an ethical conundrum.
Leave Iraq, causing financial destruction to many, and quite possibly causing famine to walk the Earth?
Or stay in Iraq, thus mitigating the above problems?
It makes my glad I don't bother to worry about ethics. I just worry about me.

I'm not sure what all the fuss is about concerning the motive for being in Iraq. Quite frankly I think if McCain stated it baldly, that in order for an assured supply of oil to Americans the US must dominate the Middle East, the majority of Americans would be just fine with it. _________________ Gravity is not a force, it is a boundary layer.

I agree, but it wouldn't be a large majority, IMO.
I'd guess 60%, max.
Further, it would be an admission that 6 years of war have been a lie.
It would also be an admission that we're thieves and bullies, and that kinduv spoils the taste of apple pie and donkey crap. _________________ Massive Human Dieoff must occur as a result of Peak Oil. I'm sure you could track the size of the majority against the average price of gas/oil and get a good read. At $2 a gallon, not too many people would want to hear the truth. They'd like to think we're good people who are doing this for democracy, freedom and security. At $4, people would accept it and wonder why the politicians didn't tell them. At $10, they'll wonder why we haven't gone into KSA and Iran yet (assuming we're not there as occupiers by $10/gallon of gas). _________________ Riches are not from abundance of worldly goods, but from a contented mind. |
