In antiquity people would never consider listening to someone who wasn't practicing his own philosophy. They would first want to see some evidence of how he lived his life according to his teachings, and what effects that had.

Both Buddhism and Christian (Eastern) orthodoxy stress that, which is why I think that they are serious about what they say.
And I haven't heard of "fire and brimstone" speeches in either of them. Why would one go around telling others that they are sinners condemned to damnation ? What's the point in that ?

Without a doubt, Jesus, being sinless, was wholly compassionate and He taught His followers to love God and love their neighbour as themselves but is this the means by which people are saved or is it the fruit of those who are saved?
Here's what Jesus said about salvation.
"Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." (John 14:6) Underline mine.
"Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." (John 3:3)
"He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him." (John 3:36)
So because He died for our sins, salvation is found in the person of Jesus Christ, not in our good works. It is our sin which seperates us from God, so that's what needs to be dealt with to restore the relationship.
Here are a few more verses.
"For by grace are ye saved through faith and that not of yourselves it is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast." (Ephesians 2:8-9)
"Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost." (Titus 3:5)
He also gave his disciples a very important task - preach the Good News of the Gospel to all people.
"And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature." (Mark 16:15)
The Gospel is that Jesus Christ died for our sins and in Him we can be saved.
"Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:" (1 Corinthians 15:1-4) Underline mine.
