With a 8% interest per year that would equal $60,648 today.
I am sure that the experiences are worth much more than that. I actually wish I traveled overseas more. But still that is a lot of money.

Funny, the planes flying international flights are filled these days primarily with middle/ working class people, it seems. That wasn't the case 30 years ago and won't be the case in a few years. Trans-oceanic flight will someday occupy a very brief and minor footnote in the history books... or maybe in the history cave drawings. _________________ Got Dharma?

| While international flights might only be for the rich and upper middle class in the future, I think maybe we will see a comeback of the previous mode of intercontinental transportation: passenger liners. |

Let's not forget that with fewer flights, one component of global dimming will diminish. I wonder what the effects will be on heat retention within our atmospheric envelope given increasing co2 levels? _________________ Bugger me, I hear oil's runnin out mate! |

We fly to Seattle once a year, and my wife knows that it won't be too many years before seeing the in-laws will be to cost prohibitive. We went to Victoria last year so that the kids could see what another country was like (yes, not terribly different) before it became too much to do so. _________________ http://www.carfree.com

I'm wondering if those large container ships (no longer hauling goods, because everyone is spending money on energy/food) could be used to haul people.
These ships can go from Long Beach, CA to Shanghai in roughly 10 days...
I doubt they'll be much international travel... _________________ "Oil is going up because we use too much oil, and the capacity to replace reserves is dwindling"

The factor that makes ships the size of the Emma Maersk (her and her sisters are the largest active ships in the world) is their efficiency when you look at their fuel consumption per kilometer to move the payload they are carrying. Just 300 milliliters per kilometer to move the 150,000,000 kg payload, compare that to the current commuter car, 50 liters per kilometer per kg of payload. Or something like that.
Hauling people would greatly reduce efficiency, so it's not likely, but stranger things have and will continue, to happen. _________________ "That the cream cannot help but always rise up to the top, well I say, <censored by peakoil.com> floats"

I recall as a kid, it cost about $300 to travel to England by air. But, general prices have multiplied about six fold since. So, if that Europe ticket goes for $1,800 each way, that would be equivalent.
Even some working people did it back then, but rarely, mostly for an important family event. A lot of middle class people travelled back then for enjoyment too. But, not near as frequent as today. |

After the consolidation/ P.O. Airline elimination, and even if fuel prices drop temporarily due to depression, I expect the tickets will be very pricey indeed....even if oil drops to say 80 FRN a "barrel".
Less players/Airlines...more people...less investors....
It looks pretty grim for cheap AIR travel.
Freighter is not a bad option...The illegals from china used to crowd into them...
I'd hate to think of 10 days worth of food would cost....or taste like. _________________ With Love to all, and Malice to none.
