Using the current price as the closing price is really sort of arbitrary for the ongoing standings, but will make more sense for the end of the year because it takes some skill/luck to prognosticate the oil price a year in advance.
Maybe I will put up some preliminary standings at some point using just the high and low (ignoring the close temporarily).
If you are a spreadsheet whiz, you can probably copy the table above and do the calculation yourself.
There is a lot of time left before the love and respect are handed out. |

That is quite possible.
Although oil is mostly going up because of supply/demand imbalances (more specifically - a worldwide diesel shortage), the US dollar - actually the Federal Reserve fiat dollar - still maintains some value.
I believe as the economy slips into severe recession late this year or early next, the Fed dollar will become about 100% backed by non-US government guaranteed debt. A dollar not backed by the US government has an uncertain value. At some point - which I do not know now - oil will be priced in something other than US dollars. That's when the price will go hyperbolic in terms of US dollars.
Sorry for the OT rant. Now back to predicting the price of oil. I propose opening up to all a new PO challenge, with predictions to be made by June 30 predicting where we go the rest of the year. Of course, we should keep the original PO challenge going. |

I like the idea. I would say though that most likely we are into a pradigm now where any price it attains or maintains will not be good. There is no such thing as $80 oil anymore, probably not $90, perhaps not $100. We are into waht once seemed like the stratosphere and even guys like Sachs are approving of predictions much higher.

Okay. I am game.
The rules will be just as you say. Entries for the midyear-revisions will be due June 30th. Viewers will forecast high, low and close. The forecast will still cover the period between July 1 and December 31,
(revised per the later post by popular demand)
Anyone that wants to guess it in Euros as well, feel free and I will record it.
The lone exception is: the winner of the midyear revision will get a slightly reduced amount of respect and love compared to the winner of the "full year" challenge.
Let the revised forecasts begin.

I'll bite;
Low 87
High 149
Close 124
( my previous guess was similar except for the close, I figured such a high would put a big hit to the economy and so a big whack to demand...
I'm revising what I'm "wishing" for basically...)

| Might be better to limit the forecast period to from July 1 to December 31, or otherwise a lot of people will have exactly the same low and/or high (being the low and/or high that was reached earlier in the year). |

I agree. The contest will cover the period between July 1 and December 31.
Pops, you are going to have to revise your prediction.
I will edit my previous post. |

Here we are in the middle of May and it's beginning to look like sjn and roccman were the only ones whose crystal balls were working. There is some kind of acceleration in the price run-up going on. The recent average gain seems to be a little less than a dollar a day. That won't put us into sjn/roccman territory, as Tyler pointed out in another thread, but it'll put it miles ahead of what even us peak oil students thought just last December. What will put it into sjn/roccman territory is for the acceleration to continue throughout this year. In that case, we'll find out just what the world economy can bear. _________________ Turn those Machines back On! - Don Ameche in Trading Places |

I'm keeping my predictions as they are. We have not even started to fall off the cliff of oil production, therefore the rate of growth in price should not go hyperbolic. We're in the plateau, prices grow because of demand growth, not both this and "cronic" decline of production.
We've this year of steady growth in price but not unprecedented (the rate of doubling). $200 is the new "psychological barrier"; as in another wave of "damn, we're doomed" happens... either in intensity of doomerosity, number of doomers or both. _________________ anagami.net |

I don't know if I'm the only one to notice this, I highly suspect I'm not. But prices of oil seem to hover about the various psychological barriers for a few days or week or even two and then keep on smashing through them. That's the pattern. Currently though, I expect the hovering to continue around each decimal increase. Soon the 130 barrier will be smashed. For myself, I think the 150 barrier is the one to watch out for in terms of truckers, farmers, etc. _________________ Turn those Machines back On! - Don Ameche in Trading Places |

Ok, the new estimate for me is:
High: $165.00
Low: (whatever the low earlier this year... $86.00?)
Close: $155.00 _________________ Everything is Impermanent. Shakyamuni Buddha |

I am keeping my US dollar predictions for the full-year as they are, although I suspect I will be too low with the low of the year.
Here are my new predictions in euro for July 1st to December 31st.
High 88 euro
Low 61 euro
Close 78 euro _________________ The organized state is a wonderful invention whereby everyone can live at someone else's expense. |
