Hello!

I'm stuck. I'm aware about Peak Oil. I believe that Peak Oil will happen, but I'm borderline lower-middle class in Chicago. I make just enough to float by and slowly whittle down my credit card debt and struggle with my 40 mile commute. I want to get ready, but I find that I'm unable to afford anything other then to educate myself. When the infrastructure breaks, I'll know why and how, but I'll be right there with the teeming masses of the unprepared. I'm gardening, I know how to sew and beat people off of me with a stick, but I don't have land, nor know anyone that owns land. So basically, I have nowhere to run to and I'm in a huge city where there's even competition for the garbage. I have my job and wife and pets tying me to the city and I'm kinda unable to uproot and get away. Is there any advice out there?

Spend a few days reading the archives here and at other places on the web.

Give yourself some time to digest the new information.

Don't assume you have to spend a lot of money to get "prepared."

A lot of preparation is educating yourself and developing a new perspective on the future.

Welcome, Johnnytrash.
The Planning for the Future forum is full of ideas. There are many variables regarding how the future is going to turn out--one of them being you may be better off being quite mobile.
The knowledge of what is happening and what will probably happen soon (within the next couple of years) will put you wwaayy out in front of the rest of the public.
Don't give up-an answer will, most likely, present itself to you as you learn more. Smile

On analogy that I read once was 'don't worry about buying an axe, when things go to hell and people start dieing, there will be axes around for you to pick up'

I'm thinking if I know what is going on, at least I'll distribute my fear over the decades before and after the peak rather then panicking at the first food riot on American soil.

I'm a cold war baby and used to have nightmares about 'The Big One' so I supposed I'm disposed to gloom and doom. And of course I'm hoping that we are all wrong and Kunstler is full of it, but I don't see how. I catch myself thinking, if society can just keep it together until 2014... (when my debt is paid off and my wife and I finish school) But I don't see things hanging on that long.

Today is a pretty wild day with this article out there mentioning the site, but if you want to talk about really good preps, plan for a variety of scenarios and possible futures.

No one really knows what will happen, but those who are able to adapt, have a good range of skills, and have emotional and psychological flexibility are probably going to do okay.

Hello Johnny trash,
You asked if there was anything that you could do...well, for starters, meet up with some fellow Chicago PeakOilers. I've been trying off and on to get my fellow Chicagoans "PeakOil" friendly. I myself am a horticulturist and run garden centers here in Chicagoland. (You can see more about our centers in the "jobs" section of these forums).

Maybe I should have a Saturday afternoon PeakOil session at the garden centers...?..that would be a viable place to meet up at. We used to do them a few years back at a coffee place.
