I think this is the beginnings of an economy based on perpetual growth and fossil fuel energy running headlong into geological energy constraints. Basically I see an undulatory downward path for the rest of my life. From here out, I think any rallies in our economic condition are going to be met with spiking commodity prices that knock us right back down.

hi everyone. i am jenny. i am 25, live on the lovely atlantic coast of south florida, and have recently become passionate about doing anything and everything i can do to save the polar bears.

i read about peak oil in a newspaper article about a woman in upstate new york who is preparing for a major food shortage.

this is all so overwhelming to me right now but i am looking forward to participating in the forum.

Welcome Jenny. We have had quite the influx of visitors as of late. Polar bears are going to be tested along with us. I have been monitoring the situation in the Arctic and it is grim indeed. I too live in Florida. Climate change has us right in its sights from hurricanes to rising sea levels. In the environmental section of the forums is a section that discusses the dramatic changes in the Arctic. Its over 50 pages in length but well worth the time to read up on it. Lots of good sites out there with issues regarding the Arctic. Good luck here and don't get overwhelmed! You have taken the first step and admitted there is a problem...congrats on that Smile

I agree saving polar bears is important.

When jackets begin running short because factories are shutting down. I will enjoy a good fur coat. Polar Bear hides make great coats. Razz

Just kidding.

Welcome.

Although polar bears obviously are not our number 1 concern here, you will find that they are discussed sometimes in the Environmental Forum, usually in Global Warming News links thread.

Since it already appears you recognize the links between nature and man, you'll find a lot to learn here.

There have been so many subjects discussed relating to fossil fuel use, you'll probably find an existing thread - using the searches features - that may give you some answers.

If you don't find the answer to your more specific concerns, start another thread in the appropiate area.

Polar Bears will be extinct before 2200 - stop worrying about them and let them go with some dignity.

You live in Florida? Not the best place to be post PO.

If I were you, I'd stop worrying about species that have no shot of making it and I'd start worrying about yourself.

Harsh, I know, but worrying about spotted owls and ring tailed lemurs and polar bears is only for those with lots of cheap energy and lots of free time.

Soon, you will have neither.

Good luck.

Welcome Jenny, take a while and read through some threads.

No Overnight Armageddon more than you have experienced so far but some think a wake up call.

Not sure what your concern for Polar Bears down in Florida has to do with peak oil but as you cited an article about human food be assured it does have something to do with oil.

Hi Jenny, That is quite a selfish perspective. I would say keep worrying about the polar bears AND the migrating bird populations AND the ocean fish stocks AND etc, etc.

First, it is good to not be so self-centered, for if we are to be dispatched, it is best to go with dignity -- for ourselves and the polar bears.

Someone has to be worrying about these creatures because our fate will also be tied to their fate as ALL creatures rely upon the environment in many ways.

The most disturbing thing about this board is the urgency attached to watching out for oneself because many of us don't see it coming -- at least, not right away. If it does come to that, I hope some of us still have the energy to watch out for the other species on this planet and our collective environment.

If you can't help yourself then you can't expect to help anyone/anything else.

If there are polar bears down in Florida, they probably are very uncomfortable.

I have good friends in Boca and Melbourne so I try to keep up with issues down there. Hope you post up!

ok people, just because i live in florida doesn't mean i can't have a vested interest in the polar bears. too many people out there don't so someone needs to.

i have only been browsing these message board for a couple of days and i have never felt more hopeless in my life. i approached this site with excitement about the forum to discuss these issues with people that actually care about them, and i gotta tell you guys, i have a headache and feel like no matter what i do and no matter how many people i tell it is pointless.

Not to be mean but try an environmental forum. We are discussing peak oil and issues relevant to it. Not saving animals unless we can use them for food, clothing, etc...

There is a tell others contingent and a a save your own contingent and another who thinks about polar bears/whales/snails and such.

You can't save the world until you save yourself.

It is huge, but there are things you can do about peak oil. We did a bunch of things so that we are now using half of the fossil fuels we did 5 years ago. It saves lots of money and makes it possible to live into the expensive energy years. It also helps with global warming, which helps out those polar bears. Here's a webalbum of what we did:

http://www.msad54.org/sahs/appliedarts/artlofving/Energysav/index.htm

Click on the pics for an explanation.

Don't give in to despair. You have to treat life as an adventure. This could be the biggest adventure ever.
