I think this is the beginnings of an economy based on perpetual growth and fossil fuel energy running headlong into geological energy constraints. Basically I see an undulatory downward path for the rest of my life. From here out, I think any rallies in our economic condition are going to be met with spiking commodity prices that knock us right back down.

Member vox_mundi submitted this to our main news page. The source has a political agenda so I rejected it but it's still a good story - worth posting here.

Slouching Toward a Population Die-Back

Quote:
Is there a famine in our future?

When we start putting food in our gas tanks, we know Americans would rather drive than live.

"We're having a world-wide food crisis," murmured the New York Times. The rest of the media took their cue, as they usually do, and headlined the new event.

The Los Angeles Times put it this way, "Vegetable oil isn't a crime--is it? Diesel owners who switch to cooking grease can run afoul of the law. Just ask the governor." The state wants its tax on alternative fuels just as they get it from the sale of gasoline.

Drivers, in all the esoteric places, are converting their cars to run on used cooking and frying oil. Some restaurants that once found it a burden to dispose of used fry-oil are now thinking of charging for it.

But, of course, the 800 lb gorilla in the world is Ethanol.

I was wondering how long that was going to take...

Americans still have trouble w/ obesity, so it isn't a matter of us living AFAIK, it's all those who rely on the exportation of cheap subsidized food which suddenly has become more expensive thanks to Ethanol tariffs and subsidization.
