I think this is the beginnings of an economy based on perpetual growth and fossil fuel energy running headlong into geological energy constraints. Basically I see an undulatory downward path for the rest of my life. From here out, I think any rallies in our economic condition are going to be met with spiking commodity prices that knock us right back down.

I am trying to become a gardener. The soil at my home is terrible and I have been reduced to growing things in pots. I am curious what everyone is growing in their gardens RIGHT NOW (not what you want to grow in the future).

Here's my list:

Squash
Tomatoes
Watermelon Vines (which are babies right now)
Apple Tree
Peach Tree

Depending on where you live you might be able to get a dumptruck load of topsoil for $200. That would greatly beat buying potting soil by the bag and buying pots.

You might find out what you can get topsoil for, then if the price is affordable, layout some beds for plants and really go to it.

In a small garden in VA you could easily have some yellow squash, zucchini, Okra, tomatoes, peppers, etc. In other words, a lot of the summer items we all love to eat while they are fresh from the garden. Also, the plants I mentioned don't need much space either, perfect for a small garden.

Let's see....in my small garden, I've crammed in:
Rhubarb
Raspberry
Blackberry (both get trimmed back in the fall)
strawberry
kale
swiss chard
spinach
lettuce
spring(pod) peas
green beans
3 types of tomato
3 types of pepper
garlic (from last fall...will pick in July and start a new crop)
radish
2 kinds of cucumber (one for eating fresh, one for pickling)
spring onion
beets
eggplant
small amount of asperagus on the side of the house
and what was I thinking...mint gone crazy on the other side of my house.
I am a heavy user of trellises, as I don't have a lot of square feet. Well, I'm trying to convince hubby into another chunk o' lawn to be devoted to vine items (would love to grow canteloup, watermelon, pumpkin, etc...)Anyway, these all grow well in my garden, as I've tried various other items over the years, and for one reason or another, they don't do well.
Find out what works on your soil...this is a multi-year experiment, so get started this year!

Some of the stuff in my garden is volunteers, left over from last year: jerusalem artichokes, onions, potatoes, strawberries.

New stuff planted this spring: potatoes, yellow squash, turnips, chard, onions, snow peas. Instead of a huge variety of stuff, I'm sticking with what does well here in the desert and focusing on lots of potatoes and turnips, for winter storage. Plus a few obligatory zucchinnis, of course, for gifts.

Almost everything I have is in pots because I'm working on my soil for next season. I'm just surprised how much fertilizer potted plants need compared to in-ground plants. The constant rain has been washing the nutrients out of the pots almost as fast as I put it in.

Some of the following are for experimental purposes (like the cabbage and beans).

Tomatoes (4 heirloom varieties)
Sweet Peppers (3 varieties)
Cucumbers
Basil
Cabbage
Pole Beans
Soy Beans
Lettuce
Radish
Onion
Cilantro
Pak Choi (now in seed stage)
Sage
Chives

I'm so glad the cukes are coming on strong because the radishes are about a week from ready and I'm getting sick and tired having only fresh lettuce from my garden.

First tomatoes are about 2-3 weeks from ripe and peppers and cilantro are just now flowering. Wouldn't mind if those honey bees, from earlier in the spring, were to make an appearance again... they just disappeared and I'm praying they are not in CCD.

I'm about to plant:

(no parsley)
Sage
Rosemary
Thyme
Basil

Here in the north of England I'm growing:

Runner beans

Spuds
Garlic
Basil
Mint
Chives

Me and my bro have an allotment (20m x 12m) and are installing raised beds on it, but this won't be fully productive intill next year.

Here in central Alberta I have growing, in several beds around our yard:

tomatoes
cucumbers
green peppers
strawberries
peas
carrots
beans
sunflowers
zucchinis

and a raspberry patch

I'm trying some things in various areas (different amounts of sun exposure, etc.) to see how much difference it will make in the yields I get.

Annuals:
peas 3 or 4 varieties
snap beans, 3 kinds
dried beans, 5? kinds
watermelon, 2 kinds
muskmelon, 3 varieties
potatoes 22+ varieties
tomatoes, 10 or 12 varieties
hot peppers, 8 varieties
sweet peppers, 10 varieties
spinach
lettuce, 6 varieties
cabbage, 4 varieties
cauliflower, 5 varieties
brocolli, 6 varieties
summer squash and zuccini, 3 varieties
winter squash, 3 varieties
leeks
celery, 2 varieties
onions, probably 10 varieties
probably some vegetables that I have forgotten
many kinds of herbs

Perennials:
blueberries, 4 varieties
apples, lots
pears, 7+ varieties
plums, 5 varieties
apricots, lots
gooseberries
sour cherries, 5 varieties
peaches, lots
raspberries, 3 varieties
boysenberries
rhubarb
asparagus

I am probably forgetting something, but this list is what I can recall off the top of my head. Picked spinach and 5 kinds of lettuce this morning so it is cool and crisp in the refrigerator for supper. Much of the garden is mulched, half or almost half of the potatoes are hilled, and we found our first potato bug a couple of days ago, but no more since then. We have cut back a lot on the number of varieties of tomatoes, peppers, and some others that we grow, only growing favorites and trying a few new ones.

My garden so far has several different varieties of tomatoes, attempting to start potatoes, bush green beans, butternut squash, peppers, dill, cabbage, marigolds and pennyroyal for pest control. Until we buy a farm -which we are looking for right now, my garden size is limited. I have been going to the "pick your own" places. We picked strawberries several weeks ago and I ended up with 40 pints of strawberry jam, 6 quarts of frozen strawberries and several pints in the refrigerator. The local amish produce is starting to come in (snap peas), so I'm going to check that out this weekend. We also have a BUNCH of blackberries behind our house, but they wont be ready for about another month.

I grow heirlooms almost exclusively--- from seedsavers.org

Can't say enough about heirlooms! Flavor, variety, and the ability to save seeds. They cost more up front. I think they're worth it.

Next year with the irrigation finished I will have corn, I think it is to late to try and start them now.....

Next year I should also have my aquaponics system ready to begin using it Very Happy
