If anyone tells you that they're "shocked" or "surprised" or "couldn't believe" what's going on. Tell them to FO. This crap has been known and in the works for decades. Goes back to the Carter administration in the US.

The rumor today is that LEH is experiencing or about to experience a run on its bank. The US banking industry has already lost $350 billion in the last ten months, and is no doubt less than half way there. The world financial markets have lost at least $8.7 trillion in that same 10 month period.
The whole financial structure is looking over a cliff into an abyss as the edge holding it is crumbling. Soon the masses are going to be shocked to find that they are waking into, not out of, a nightmare!

The word is DENIAL.
I heard a financial commentator of the Business News neetwork today actually claim that the large U.S. based automakers had no way to forecast the plunge of light duty truck sales. All I could think is she must have been living in a cave for the last 30 years. She should have said the evidence was there, but they chose to to live in a dream world. But, she actually believes they were caught in an unexpected situation.
If you want to see some fantasy, click on this, and select the 3:45 PM segment with Rebecca Lindblad. She actually earns her keep as an auto industry analyst for Glaobal Insight, an investment firm. I might just check out her recent stock recommendations and short them.

Surprise, surprise, people is starting to realize the impact of high prices in oil, not only at the pump, but elsewere link
Quote:
New York - Besides gasoline, the Department of Energy calculates, there are 57 major uses of petroleum – everything from cosmetics to ballpoint pens, nylons, and even the waxes in chewing gum.
That is why the effect of high oil prices is now spreading well beyond the pump, where gasoline hit another record price of $3.98 a gallon on Wednesday. Now, consumers will have to brace themselves for other higher costs, since businesses such as Kimberly-Clark, Procter & Gamble, and Colgate-Palmolive are raising prices on their products to recoup energy costs.
In brief, this means less money in consumers' pockets in the months ahead. But it also goes beyond consumers. For example, the price of asphalt is up 65 percent so far this year – and municipalities' and states' road departments are cutting back. This may mean bumpier roads ahead.

Appearances are everything. In believing that the situation was "unexpected," she has made chances of subsidizing some portion of the industry (nationalizing pensions, for example) much more favorable, at least in the eyes of Congress.
It's fairly obvious that a combination of negligence and/or willful ignorance has played a huge role in the demise of the Big Three, e.g. GM CEO Rick Wagoner (on the advent of $2 gas) commenting that fuel efficiency was "not a concern" for them, but that song doesn't sell nearly as well when you're looking for handouts. _________________ "It's called the American Dream because you'd have to be asleep to believe it."
