I am looking for a quality air gun that can be used for small game and bird hunting that can be repaired at home.

Someone mentioned a Theoben Classic, as one such gun, but I was told they are extict. They said they can be repaired with just new 'O' rings.

What do your recommend for home serviceable air guns? Is there such an animal?

Why an air gun and not a 410 guage shot gun?

I've picked up a few air guns at auctions sales cheap and they work fine. The best one I have is very old and still shoots like new.

When I was looking into buying an air rifle for a small backyard target practice range a few years ago, my research pointed to RWS air rifles as being some of the best (and best bang for the buck). I don't know how serviceable they are, but since they are some of the best made, I'm sure getting some parts (seals, etc) for the future and learning how to install them would not be too difficult.

Growing up we lived on the edge of town and had open pasture behind our house. We had a bird feeder on our fence and quail and dove would come to the feeder. We had highpower airgun (no idea what brand) and would take out 1 or 2 birds whenever we felt like having fresh quail or dove for dinner.

It was the best because the airgun would not scare the other birds because they would come back to the feeder within an hour or so.

22's with subsonic loads actually make less than an airgun, we'll at least the short of airguns that a 17 year can afford to buy.

However if you're going to use a subsonic .22 you're going to need a bolt action rifle, the subsonic loads don't have enough energy to properly cycle an autoloader.

Sheridan Blue Streak.

I had this airgun as a kid/teenager. It was very powerful for an airgun. Squirrels, birds, ducks, prairie dogs, and other like sized game were no match for this rifle. It is .20 cal so the pellets are not the standard .177 cal but are still pretty easy to find.

Sheridan Blue Streak.

Very serviceable! Just buy some extra o-rings and you will be fine. I still have mine from over 20 years ago and it still can take out the above game.

I also agree with SpringCreekFarm. A .410 shotgun is more versatile than any airgun and will take down larger game. I.E. Geese, ducks, etc. Of course 500 pellets will fit into a case the size of a pack of cigs. Try doing that will shotgun rounds!

Thanks for all the info. I have some shotguns, do not have a 410, but I need an air gun for my intended purpose.

Today's edition of http://www.survivalblog.com/ discusses air guns.
