Truckers in my country (Spain) are starting a strike, fishermen too. I thought iteneresting to start a topic with all oil price related strikes worldwide so we can get a better picture.

Spain's truck drivers begin national strike over fuel prices

Spain, Italy, Portugal join French fishing strike over fuel prices

Seafood prices

There was an article in today's HS newspaper about fuel riots all over the world. I'll translate the beginning of the article manually.

Quote:
Operation Snail blocks highways all over France. In Bryssels hundreds of fishermen ja police clashed hard. In Portugal entire fishing fleet stays in ports as a protest. In Britain hunders of motorcyclers drive side by side with truck drivers and taxi drivers in a slow column across Manchester. In India schools are being closed and flights cancelled due to demonstrations. In Malesia, opposition promises rough protests which can stagger their government.

Above were only a fraction of last days and weeks fuel protests were people have opposed rise of fuel prices all over the world.

THanks for the trans. my Finnish friend.

I feel bad for them. They actually believe that this is not a supply/demand issue.

It's about as useful as protesting the heat of the sun.

I am not so sure. The British truck drivers interviewed by the BBC at the go-slow in Wales seemed well aware of the global supply/demand issue. They simply believed that due to the large tax component in the price of fuel, the government was in a position to compensate.

When the next General Election is held in 2009 or 2010, if as seems likely fuel prices remain a hot political issue, the opposition Conservative Party could capitalise on it by promising a tax cut, such as ceasing to charge VAT on Duty. They may also be inclined to pay for it by slashing government spending rather than funding through borrowing, as has been the New Labour Party's practice of late.

There is certainly some pure ignorance out there, but people are reading the headlines, soundbites about the boom in China and the Middle East have filtered through, now the question is what they are willing to sacrifice to get their wish that the government acts as a relief valve. Another year or two of this and some sort of pact with the devil could be entertained.

Apparently, since Malesia is considered to be a region, and not a country, I'll assume it really means Malaysia. Prices here just went up to 2.70 ringgit per litre (or about US3.20 per gallon, if my math was right).

Traffic around the cities was screwed up when cars were stopping all the way from the gas stations into the highways themselves. All just to save a few bucks. I don't want to think about what happens when the masses wake up and turn the gas lines into food lines.

We're not really good at protesting. The one held the day after the price hike had more reporters than protesters, so our Opposition parties are holding another one planned sometime in July.
