In some new Bakken news, Continental Resources recently struck oil by tapping not the middle Bakken, as everyone else had been doing lately, but by tapping the lower Bakken.
The Bice 1-29H, completed in the Three Forks/Spanish formation in North Dakota, produced nearly 700 barrels of oil a day during its first week of operation, officials said. The significance of Tuesday's announcement, they added, is that the well penetrated a lower shale formation within the North Dakota field.
Harold Hamm, chairman and chief executive of the company, said the theory is that the formation — part of the lower Bakken — is not affected by existing production from shallower shale layers.
[...]
"This thing could be totally separate from the upper zones where we and other companies already have been completing wells,” Hamm said. "The first indications look good. We will have to test and see if in fact that's the case.”
[...]
Hamm said Tuesday other companies have the same theory as Continental when it comes to the lower Bakken. He said the lower Bakken cuts through most of the leases the company has within the field.

Based on the micro-seismic information I've seen the modern frac design already penetrates both upper and lower sections from the middle member.
And based on how drilling a horizontal well works in the first place, lag time from MWD to surface and location behind the bit, more than a few wells clip both upper and lower sections while drilling anyway.
I heard this from one of my customers while pumping gas of course. _________________ Freddy RULZ!

Besides the 2006 WSJ article on this and the follow ups from other papers including the NYT, Bloomberg has an "exclusive" story on this from June 3rd, which reports as if this is news. Bloomberg
An excerpt that at least mentions peak oil, even if it merely dismisses it as crazies who predict horrible things.
Quote:
Delaying the Peak
Some oil, like the 10.4 billion barrels estimated to be recoverable in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, remains off limits -- as a nature conservation measure -- even as President George W. Bush renews his calls for drilling there. North Dakota, already crisscrossed by farm roads, is open for business.
As traditional oil fields become scarce, exploration companies must tackle trickier ones to stay in business. Their success will determine when the world reaches peak oil -- the high point in production after which new supply will no longer be there to slake new demand. It's a gloomy concept. Peak oil theorists predict the mother of all oil shocks, complete with famine and wars for energy.
These days, big new oil deposits often come with caveats. Brazil's Petroleo Brasileiro SA says its offshore Tupi field contains as much as 8 billion barrels of oil, which the company hopes to start pumping next year. But the field is under more than four miles of water and rock, where pressure can crush drilling equipment.

Hi, sorry if this question is a little two obvious. Anyway I've recently seen figures that state that the North Dakota Bakken holds 450 billion barrels of oil, enough to push back the peak date considerably. Can anyone clarify on why this formation will or will not affect peak oil?

The issue of peak oil is not the reserves, as there is plenty of oil on this planet, but rather the EROEI of extracting it. So no, it really won't effect it any more than the other trillions of barrels locked up never to be extracted in other low EROEI shales and sands and such.

its 10000 feet down and spread over a vast area in rock that has pours like a spounge.Little pockets with a drop or two of oil like substance in it.
Its probably harder to extract than shale or coal considering how spread out and under ground it tis.

Think of it this way; If it was such a great field why didn't we start drilling and producing there big time when U.S. oil production peaked in 1970, when the the 1973 oil shock hit, or the next oil shock in 1980 (or thereabouts).
Answer: it isn't such a great field. The oil industry has never been guilty of saving the best for last.

Guys, come on.
The OP asked a reasonable question, and, frankly, the answers so far have not been what you'd call easy to understand.
OP -
Bakken is SHALE, not oil. There may be oil trapped in the shale, but that is distinctly different from oil that is freeflowing, like what you'd usually think of for oil.
There are several threads on this site about shale and Bakken - search, find, and read.
In short, look at it this way . . .
You want water.
You've got two options.
1. A nice, deep well, filled with millions of gallons of luscious, pure water.
2. A giant field filled miles deep with damp burlap sacks. If you take one and apply tremendous pressure, you can extract one cup of water. All in all, there is the same water in the sacks as there is in the well.
1. Is Iraqi oil, Saudi Oil, Texas Oil.
2. Is shale. Even if you could squeeze the oil out, it will be super expensive and you will NOT be able to give everybody a drink.
Shale is a false hope. _________________ Massive Human Dieoff must occur as a result of Peak Oil. Many more than half will die. It will occur everywhere, including where you live. If you fail to recognize this, then your odds of living move toward the "going to die" group.

People lie. Others hope. Some deny. Others mope. There are lots of reason why folks do not want to recognize peak oil. There are lots of excuses and diversion they'll invent to deny the simple fact that things run out. Things run down. Entropy.
The planet earth is running down for us humans. That's just the way it is. Obvious to a brained-individual _________________ ree rah rip ram. sunofabitch godamn. hidey didey christ almighty. rah rah crap

Think of a slurpee the size of North Dakota. Now push in enough straws to suck to juice out from the ice. Now suck. All the straws. At once. Repeat. _________________ Civilization is a personal choice.

what kind of explosion/explosions would it take to break up the small pockets so the oil would then created in a larger pool ?
Also this is only a what if Im bored.
