I think this is the beginnings of an economy based on perpetual growth and fossil fuel energy running headlong into geological energy constraints. Basically I see an undulatory downward path for the rest of my life. From here out, I think any rallies in our economic condition are going to be met with spiking commodity prices that knock us right back down.

Where were you fishing?

There are some great places to fish up north of the city, in Westchester. We used to fish as kids in NYC's reservoirs and catch huge carp and other fish.

I'm in PA right now. Visiting my folks for father's day. We fished at a lake near where they live.

Panfish(sunfish, bluegills, etc) are my favorite, followed closely by walleye and then probably crappie.

Catch them on worms or poppers/jigs?

And the great thing is that you did the lake a favor. Those guys will overpopulate really easily and it's important to take out a bunch of the small bluegill. Lots of folks don't like to mess with cleaning them, but they're good eating and if you have a small sharp fillet knife just take a good fillet off each side and you'll have them cleaned in no time.

My great grandmother used to feed fish to her cow. The milk tasted a bit off, but slice an onion into it, let it simmer, you end up with the finest chowder.

One of the best things I ever ate was fresh walleye.

Score!

Before I learned about PO, I had used some inheritance money from my Mother's passing to buy a used 17' Glastron Bowrider ski boat. It can, of course be used to fish from, so I need to calculate how many fish I would need to catch to exceed the gasoline energy to get the boat to the water plus the amount of gasoline used for the boat once it's on the lake. Lake Buchanan is about 25 miles from my house, and when the F-150 is pulling the boat, I only get about 12.5 mpg. So at least four gallons of gasoline would be needed just to get the boat to the lake and back. (Or ca. $16 worth of fish.)

Anyone want to relate how many lbs of filleted fish (calories) I would need to harvest to cover the gasoline energy value?

I haven't had the boat at the lake in about two years, one reason is the eroei.

But there is the fun factor...

Smile

Edited for clarification.

I'm sure I don't need to tell you this, Xerces, but the parts of the fish you don't eat go into the garden...

When I was little, the old neighbor guy used to plant a patch of corn behind his barn. We lived on a lake and he would go catch some fish and put a dead fish under each plant.

That's what the native American Indians figured out a long time ago.

If you have a good fishing spot you are lucky. Looked at Krogers and 95% of the fish was farm raised crap. Isn't it sad in the US we have to buy fish from China, Africa, Thailand and Chile? They don't care what sort of crap they feed farm raised fish. Loaded with PCB's and carcinogens from A to Z.

Whatever you don't eat, bottle/jar the rest. Home canned fish is excellent! Way better than canned tuna!

Fishing is one area i could stand to spend more time doing. I have all the equipment, live about a mile from the river and like doing it. I do hate filleting fish, although the guts are awesome fertilizer.

Since i first started my garden, i bet i have 30 or so walleyes carcases in the garden. I just bury them around my plants, just under the surface so the flies can't get to them.
