Like the illusion of Wall Street, with its vast and powerful investment banks, now shuttered, China too is an illusion perpetuated by the Globalists that gave us the 15,000 mile Caesar salad, poisoned cat food and lead based paint on babies' pacifiers. Like the illusion that money would come from thin air to always push housing prices higher, China has spent a generation pursuing its illusion. Pursuing an unattainable dream to be like the West, while 6000 years of its carefully shepherded top soil blows into the sea.

I think Obama is genuinely clueless. If he was the "Power down" guy he would talk about lower speed limits and higher gas taxes or rebuilding the rail system to its' somewhat useful state as it existed in 1910.
Powering down to the early 20th century wouldn't be a bad alternative compared to what we are facing in the near future.

McCain promoting nuclear power is like Steve Jobless introducing the iPhone. U can spend 30 years living in poverty chasing after half baked schemes or just do what you already know needs to be done. _________________ People first, then things, then dollars.

Interesting how obama is rejecting at least now anyway, nuclear power.
Obama and his fellow liberals and the environmentalists are the reason this country isn't getting millions more barrels of oil right now from ANWR and the continental shelf and uses coal and diesel for electricity instead of electricity from modern nukes.
Of course Obama and his buddies are going to reject nukes and drilling....thats what they are all about.

Don't worry even "Greens" will get around to extracting every last available drop. Oil just needs to keep going up then it will be inevitable. _________________ "Once the game is over, the king and the pawn go back in the same box."

No PA - the reason we are not getting millions more barrels is because there are too many people on the planet.
You will understand this one day PA.
You absolutely will.
And it will be painful PA.
It absolutely will be painful for you. _________________ "There must be a bogeyman; there always is, and it cannot be something as esoteric as "resource depletion." You can't go to war with that." Emersonbiggins

nuclear plants don't replace oil. Only natural gas when used in making electricity.
Thats a profoundly inaccurate statement.
Some electricity is still generated by diesel generators. Diesel comes from oil, dude.
Plug-in hybrids and electric cars run on electricity, dude. Thats another way to replace oil, dude.
Nukes also replace coal-fired generators, which release huge amounts of CO2 to cause Greenhouse warming.
cheers!
Takes 100 barrels of oil to make a plug in "hybrid".
Not if you use electric vehicles and electric mining equipment and electric power from nukes to do the mining, transport the materials, and build the hybrid. ---Then it would take much less oil.
I don't believe anyone has built electric mining equipment on the scale you propose. There is a reason that the likes of Caterpillar and Cummins still dominate in the mining power field. Still, it's another oppurtunity for and entrepreneur among the millions. _________________ "That the cream cannot help but always rise up to the top, well I say, <censored by peakoil.com> floats"

There would also be more NG available for poor schmucks like me to heat my house.I'm considering converting from heating oil to NG.If a lot more people did this the savings in heating oil use could be substantial.

NG use accelerated during the Reagan years. Clinton opened up plenty of federal lands for drilling leases. Petroleum for electricity generation is ca. 2%, mostly Hawaii. Who are you trying to bullshit, Plant? One thing we like about this site is that it's largely free from partisan yawnfests.

Oh those damn environmentalists!
Its a simple fact that environmentalists helped block nuclear plants in the U.S. back in the 20th century.
Things are some environmentalists now who support nukes as a way to cut CO2 emissions, but most environmentalists still prefer diesel-fueled electric generators and CO2 polluting coal-fired plants to nukes.

Wrong again.
Coal and oil have been cheaper than nucs.
So we use coal and oil. _________________ "There must be a bogeyman; there always is, and it cannot be something as esoteric as "resource depletion." You can't go to war with that." Emersonbiggins

When, exactly, has Obama been less than favorable in talking about nuclear energy? He's always been for it. The worst you can say is that he's been all too political about Yucca Mountain and pandering to Nevada. But, it's not like Bush got crap done about Yucca in the six years he had a GOP legislature to work with.
Fact is, with other rational Dems able to use the cover of a nuclear-friendly Dem at the helm, it's likelier Obama can get it done, where Reagan/Bush/Clinton/Bush haven't. Like Nixon was able to open China.
Novus - Obama is strongly (both words, and actions both in the Illinois Senate and the US Senate) pro-Amtrak, and pro-Amtrak expansion. Which is weak sauce as far as rail systems go. But compared to McCain, for whom the elimination of passenger rail has been a 20-year mission, Obama is the powerdown candidate. _________________ At 1% annual growth, human bodies will incorporate every gram in the observable universe in approximately 10,170 years.
