This article, published a couple of months ago, relates to changes due to come into effect in 2011. It will increase fuel consumption of new cars across the EU by 5%. And this added to the biofuels wrong-headedness. Idiots. Haven't they done enough already?

That's plain stupid.
Fuel consumption does not increase by 5% with your lights on.

A crappy little engine outputs at least 50 Kw, which is 50.000 watts. Headlight + taillights will at most consume 200 watts.

That is 0.4% in the worst case.

And on a sidenote, if I am not mistaken, the alternator puts out the same amount of power regardless of what electrical things I have on or off.

I really like those guys driving at dawn with their lights off, to save some 0.1% fuel and lightbulb wear ... at expense of accidents. I run into these people at least twice a week.

------------
Use google and ask people my friend ... before believing every crap the media feeds you.

Yeah, another idiotic attack against the EU. Using anything they can, don't they.

I have an idea.
Let's ban all traffic lights. The amounts of fosil fuel we save by not using electricity with those, is tremendous.

I am in for any decent idea that help reduce fosil fuel usage, but as I said ... decent, not stupid and useless.

Sure, I agree with you. I think that the OP simply wanted to blame the European Union for something, anything -- that's a pretty common attitude in the UK.
