Like the illusion of Wall Street, with its vast and powerful investment banks, now shuttered, China too is an illusion perpetuated by the Globalists that gave us the 15,000 mile Caesar salad, poisoned cat food and lead based paint on babies' pacifiers. Like the illusion that money would come from thin air to always push housing prices higher, China has spent a generation pursuing its illusion. Pursuing an unattainable dream to be like the West, while 6000 years of its carefully shepherded top soil blows into the sea.

Seahorse,

You and they are insane on this one. Europe, Japan, and China are dependent on Iranian oil and wouldn't be too pleased. You can also bet Venezuela would shift US supplies to China in such an event.

Cid,

I just wish I was getting paid to think of all these great ideas. Why worry about the Chinese getting Venezuelan oil? The American navy can, at any time, redirect with impunity virtually every oil tanker in the world to US ports, so, no real fear of Venezuelan oil going to China, not if the US needs it anyway. Sound nutty? The US just reactivated its new south American fleet, forgot the number, but, looks like the Monroe Doctrine is alive and well for the resource wars.

The saber rattling gets cranked up a notch.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/middle_east/article4178960.ece

"Israeli aircraft have conducted a long-range mission designed to prepare for a possible strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities and to send a message to the world that it is ready to take military action if diplomacy fails to halt Tehran’s atomic programme. ...."

Bolton says Israel will attack Iran after the US election but before a new president is inaugurated.

Quote:
This morning on Fox News, former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton continued his drumbeat for war against Iran. Adopting Bill Kristol’s argument, Bolton suggested that an attack on Iran depends on who Americans elect as the next President:

I think if they [Israel] are to do anything, the most likely period is after our elections and before the inauguration of the next President. I don’t think they will do anything before our election because they don’t want to affect it. And they’d have to make a judgment whether to go during the remainder of President Bush’s term in office or wait for his successor.

Bolton gamed out the fallout from an attack on Iran. He claimed that Iran’s options to retaliate after being attacked are actually “less broad than people think.” He suggested that Iran would not want to escalate a conflict because 1) it still needs to export oil, 2) it would worry about “an even greater response” from Israel, 3) and it would worry about the U.S.’s response.

Bolton then concluded that Arab states would be excited if the U.S. or Israel attacked Iran:

I don’t think you’d hear the Arab states say this publicly, but they would be delighted if the United States or Israel destroyed the Iranian nuclear weapons capability.

An attack on Iran will cause enough of an effect on global energy supplies to destroy what is left of the global economy.

PO will destroy what is left of the global economy.

The neo cons know this.

Therefore Iran will be attacked to bring about this collapse on their terms.

There will be no presidential elections.

Roccman,

I agree, there is no evidence of preparation for a possible turning over of the reins, even though that would appear likely based on recent polls.

They do not intend to leave.

Reuters

Quote:
"There was a rumour ... that the Israeli air force had launched an attack on Iranian nuclear facilities," said one foreign exchange trader, echoing several traders in energy, equity and fixed income markets across Europe.

An Iranian official in Iran, however, said there had been no attack.

"This is just a rumour. No attack against Iran's nuclear facilities has taken place," the official told Reuters.

The rumour reflected nervousness about growing tensions in the Middle East, including a weekend report that the Israeli military may have been practising for an attack.

Crude oil was up $1.13 a barrel at $137.86, also pressured by a strike in oil producer Nigeria.

Iran: EU 'Carrots and Sticks' Won't Stop Our Nuke Pursuit
Tuesday, June 24, 2008

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran said Tuesday that additional sanctions by the European Union will not affect Tehran, while President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad proposed the formation of a special court to punish the world "tyrants" for their attempt to thwart Iran's nuclear program.

Ahmadinejad was quoted as saying to a group of judges that "a court should be formed to try and punish all world criminals who invade the rights of the Iranian nation," according to the state IRNA news agency.

A denied rumour is true.

Cid, Roccman.......

I've been trying to figure out all day where this rumor came from and who would have leaked it to the markets. I had my eye on the MSM today and didn't really hear anything about this rumor. This all just leads me to believe that someone is testing the waters so to speak. Let the rumor out for a few mins and see how the markets react.

I just can't shake the feeling that this "rumor" was intentionally leaked. Care to help me speculate?

IAEA chief "joins the chorus" and says Iran could make a nuke in six months to a year. Whatever happened to the old within 10 years line? Is it merely coincidence that all these new time tables now coincide with the ending of the Bush Presidency? Maybe, I'm just seeing ghosts. I promise that I will relax about my worst fear, an attack on Iran, after Bush leaves office and we have a new sitting president. Until then, I remain concerned.

Quote:
IAEA Chief: Iran Could Make Nuke In 6 Months
CBS News Interactive: About Iran
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (CBS) ― The head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency said Iran could create a nuclear weapon in six months.

IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei spoke on Al-Arabiya television on June 20, discussing Iran's nuclear program, and the potential for the Middle Eastern country to produce a nuclear weapon.

"If Iran wants to turn to the production of nuclear weapons, it must leave the NPT, expel the IAEA inspectors, and then it would need at least, considering the number of centrifuges and the quantity of uranium Iran has...It would need at least six months to one year," ElBaradei said.

"Therefore, Iran will not be able to reach the point where we would wake up one morning to an Iran with a nuclear weapon," he said.

His interviewer then asked "If Iran decides today to expel the IAEA from the country, it will need six months to produce [nuclear] weapons?"

The IAEA chief answered, "It would need this period to produce a weapon, and to obtain highly-enriched uranium in sufficient quantities for a single nuclear weapon."

The ElBaradei interview was conducted one day after reports emerged of a large-scale military exercise by Israel.

U.S. officials said they thought the Israeli exercises were meant to warn Iran of Israel's abilities to hit its nuclear sites.

ElBaradei also warned that he will resign as chief of the UN nuclear agency if Iran is attacked by any country.

"I always think of resigning in the event of a military strike...If military force is used, I would conclude that there is no mechanism left for me to defend," he said.

"The reports this week of Israeli military maneuvers, which took place in early June, provoked the IAEA warning," said CBS News Foreign Affairs Pamela Falk, who is based at the U.N., "because atomic energy chief ElBaradei has been pleading with Iran to accept a new package of incentives before another round of sanctions would be imposed."

"The problem in the region is that, as time passes and the clock is ticking on Iran's uranium enrichment program, there is a fear that Israel will act, as it did in Syria last year, to attack at least one of Iran's nuclear facilities," said Falk, who was in Saudi Arabia earlier this week.

"Israel is evidently the most threatened by the last IAEA report, which concluded that there are unanswered questions about Iran's ability to eventually develop nuclear weapons," said Falk, "so it is elBaradei himself who produced the report that is making Israel nervous."

Meanwhile, Iran is reiterating its decision to continue enriching uranium, calling Western pressure to suspend the work "illogical."

The statement by a government spokesman came as Europe waits for Iran's formal answer to an international package of incentives designed to rein in its nuclear program.

Iran's official IRNA news agency quoted Iranian spokesman Gholam Hossein Elham on Saturday as saying that his country will respond to the package at a convenient time.

The package would give Tehran economic incentives, and the chance to develop alternate light-water reactors, in return for dropping the uranium enrichment.

For all a couple of points to bounce around our collective intelligence.

Regarding Vz oil going to China they penned that deal over a year ago. I forget the exact numbers but it was an escalating increase over five years of significance. I think the high end of delivery was 600,000 bopd.

As far as US intervention in the export of that oil I think it would require a very extreme situation here. That oil wouldn't belong to Vz. It would belong to China. Over the last 5 years China has invested over $4 billion in the Vz oil infrastructure. Hijacking their oil on the high seas would be considered an declaration of war by almost anyone's standard.

Regarding Iran's ability to develop a functional nuke I'm not sure that's the important issue. Though I have seen every Hollywood scenario of nuclear holocost I don't view myself as an absolute expert but possessing the enriched material itself is a potentially menacing development. Everyone knows about dirty bombs so we'll skip the details. But a sky blast of a nuke over Isreal would spread a lot of harm to the Arab world as well as many others down wind. It would seem that delivering a dirty bomb into Isr. territory would accomplish the goal: most, if not all, of the pop. would have to be relocated...essentially Isr would cease to exist as a nation. We all know Iran has rockets that can reach Isr. And ground transport can't be ruled out. Just like horseshoes...close counts.
