Total Starts Several Units at Leuna Oil Refinery

June 23 (Bloomberg) -- Total SA, Europe's largest oil refiner, started several units at its Leuna plant in eastern Germany after a seven-week halt for maintenance.
``They have started to restart the different units,'' Burkhard Reuss, a Paris-based spokesman, said by telephone today, without identifying the units. The 227,000-barrel-a-day refinery was shut May 3 for work that is carried out every five years.
The maintenance work cost about 200 million euros ($311 million) and comprised unit and equipment inspections, Total said in a statement April 29. Fuels including gasoline, diesel and gasoil were stockpiled before the closure.
India's Reliance to start new refinery in 3-6 mths

MUMBAI, June 12 (Reuters) - India's leading petrochemical producer and refiner, Reliance Industries Ltd, will commission its new refinery and Krishna-Godavari Basin gas fields in 3-6 months, Chairman Mukesh Ambani said on Thursday.
The 580,000 barrels a day refinery is being built by unit Reliance Petroleum Ltd (RPET.BO: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), 5 percent owned by Chevron, in Jamnagar in the western state of Gujarat.
The Krishna-Godavari basin is off India's east coast.

I've actually thought of that, but I'm not sure announcements of stuff like that would make a whole thread worthwhile. You'd have maybe a dozen or two announced new refineries or expansions a year, plus maybe some updates. Would that really be worth an ongoing thread?

But if anyone thinks it would be a good idea, I could start such a thread. I do know of several expansions in addition to the ones I posted above. Who knows, maybe there'd be more than I suspect. _________________ Abundance - what a concept!

Shortage puts gas stations in a bind

More Petro-Canada stations are running dry in Calgary, forcing some retailers to wait for crucial deliveries which could be driven by truck drivers flown in from Ontario.
At least six of the company's approximately 30 Calgary service stations had run completely empty as of Wednesday, and it's expected they won't be the last.
"There's going to be more that run out over time than there are today," said Petro-Canada spokeswoman Kelli Stevens.
Other stations have also started to run out of certain grades of gasoline, and some of them are selling higher grades at lower-grade prices.

The LOOP is 18 miles south of Grand Isle, LA. It looks like if Gustav maintains itself as a CAT 3 or better, and track similar to what models are showing, then it may feel the brunt of this storm, both in surge, wind, and wave action.
Katrina missed it towards the east as it came ashore. The western side of any landfalling cane is not the worst. The northeastern quadrant usually has the highest wind and surge for Gulf coast systems. Port Fourchon and several large refineries lie almost directly in the path currently towards Houma and points near that area.
I'd consider a storm like this on a track to the SW of the mouth of the Miss. delta possibly even worse than Katrina as far as offshore and refinery damage probabilities. I think this is being downplayed as much as possible at the moment by the media and the energy companies.

I agree with AP 100%... This is all be downplayed. I bet Cheney in the boyz in the WH are about crapping their pants knowing what could/probably will take place in the next 72hrs. Way to many eggs in the GOM basket... The weekly oil report is going to look downright ugly in a week or two...
Think of all the rigs that are going to break loose or just downright sink! _________________ Clothing should be optional.

Something that happenned with Katrina as I recall, a lot of small time producing rigs were judged not worth replacing because the oil remaining in the resevoirs they were working was worth less money than the cost of replacing the rigs.
In total somewhere over 100,000 bbl/d of GOM crude production was permanently lost as a result. Refinery shutdowns began in Louisiana Saturday, and refining operations in this coastal county of Texas began reducing capacity over the weekend. In addition to Total's refinery, the refining operations of Motiva Enterprises and Valero Energy Corp. (VLO) in Port Arthur also were running at reduced capacity.
