Like the illusion of Wall Street, with its vast and powerful investment banks, now shuttered, China too is an illusion perpetuated by the Globalists that gave us the 15,000 mile Caesar salad, poisoned cat food and lead based paint on babies' pacifiers. Like the illusion that money would come from thin air to always push housing prices higher, China has spent a generation pursuing its illusion. Pursuing an unattainable dream to be like the West, while 6000 years of its carefully shepherded top soil blows into the sea.

Joel-

I was in Colorado back around the summer of 2000. The one thing that stuck out to my wife and i are how in shape the people were. Coming from fat A$$ central (WI), it was a shock. We are both skinny and exercise more then anyone we know. I play a lot of tennis and bike a lot, while my wife walks a lot. I sometimes wish we lived in Colorado. I still remember seeing bicyclists biking up Mt. Evans. Insane. My car had trouble getting up that road.

A lot of it has to do with our horrible weather. If you've never been to hell, come to Wisconsin during a cold snap in the winter. It blows bananas. Its almost come to me leaving a finding a place to stay for a few months in Florida or somewhere along the gulf coast.

I do believe the weather here (natural gas prices) will push people south.

I do not know why we are so opposed to excercise. But we are. We have escalators to go up one flight of stairs, elevators for more, drive to the fast food place, drive thru so we dont have to walk in, ride, ride, ride. Sad really.

I am a product of that generation dont get me wrong. One in 4 ppl with diabetes in America now. GOOD LORD> Most due to lifestyle choices. Cant keep our mouths shut.

I sit down in the evenings after supper and want a snack. WHATS with that? Cant be hungry. I live on a shady curvy street and ppl walk here a lot. Good to see and at least they are trying.

Join a gym, get a trainer and get started. TURN off the television, plant a garden or walk in the evenings. MOVE YOUR ASS ppl.

Just thought I'd point out this study which shows 1 in 12 with diabetes in U.S., not 1 in 4.

http://abcnews.go.com/Health/DiabetesNews/wireStory?id=5235214

1 in 12 is alarming enough either way.

I walk a lot. I have noticed that if you don't count the people you can only see by looking at them through automobile glass, you get an eerie Twilight Zone episode "last man on earth" feeling walking around an American town.
I have been stopped and questioned numerous times by the police for just walking around. In this country walking is considered a suspicious activity.
We are a nation of voluntary paraplegics. I think peak oil may be our ultimate salvation if it doesn't kill us first.

Before you have the lap band surg. see if your doc will try you on Byetta. Its a diabetic drug normally but many are writing it for weight loss or metabolic syndrome which you have to have if you areobese. It keeps you from eating honestly. But you have to be determined somewhat.

I know from experience but at least it helps you to NOT eat as much. Plus portion control and calorie counting. If you do those, you wont need the lap band surg. But you have to make a life long decision. I have been there and done that.

Thanks, I'll ask about it.
I am determined. You have to be to jump through all the hoops to get approval for bariatric surgery. What I don't understand is that some people, after having the surgery, go back to their old habits and put the weight back on.
I have started trying to walk every day. yesterday I make it our to the street (about 100 yards) and back. Today I made it to the c-store (about 200 yards) and back. I was out of cat food.-Note to self- add cat to PO prep list-
I didn't drive. Long road, but I'll get there.

A lot of people walk, try not to put Europeans on a pedestal because Americans are Europeans except with a lot more land.

Landmass of Europe: 10,180,000 km² (3,930,000 sq mi)

Wikipedia

Landmass of the USA: 9,826,630 km² (3,794,066 sq mi)

Wikipedia

Difference is in population numbers, I grant you that.

Europe: 731,000,000
USA: 304,429,000

Still, this only amounts to a density difference of (Eur) 70/km² (181/sq mi) against (US) 31/km² (80/sq mi). I don't think that's quite dramatic.

And ever been to Sweden?

I grew up in suburban Dublin, Ireland and was lucky to have a safe place to play and could walk all over the neighborhood. My parents restricted TV - it was sh**ty anyway. My schools had very good exercise programs, too, and I think that has added to lifelong fitness. My sister, on the other hand, 11 years younger was spoiled more in what she could eat, by then my parents were more worried about her being outside the house, the school she went to didn't have sports fields (development had come along and built over my old school) She now has weight problems.

I think high activity in our early years is so important for lifelong health. How a town/city is built makes a difference. Walking to the local shops, to school, to a friends house. This should be normal.

Abnormal is the modern suburbs, that are even now in Europe. The grids of American cities are totally geared towards the motorized vehicle. Some of the bikeways are really nice, but you still have to take a car to get to them. I bike here in Boise, but have constantly to look over my shoulder to make sure that I can safely manouver.

I don't blame Americans for being lazy, well not all of them, they are living in a system of development that is out of control - the rest of the world isn't immune and is catching up.

Having visited New York, Boston and Chicago (with good mass transit systems), I've observed that their poplace is much leaner. Getting out and walking - just a few blocks every day - is apparently an easy way to NOT GET OBESE.

The Midwest is awash in overweight people, partly because the area is so boring and the weather is so crummy and there's no place to go and nothing to do. Many little towns have no culture and folks just sit around and wait for the latest movie with chain saws and snakes to hit the local video rental store.

I just have to say... Chicago is in the midwest. And I used to live in the midwest (in a city) and now I live on the NW coast in a small town and the weather here REALLY SUCKS. It rains almost every dang day. And it's still cold enough out in June that we have to wear sweatshirts. In KC, MO we had music, art, culture, gooood restaraunts. And seasons. There is nothing to do here and there are a LOT of fat and RUDE people. At least the fatty's in the midwest are friendly.

When I used to work in Philly, I would walk a mile to the train station, get off at 8th and Market and walk another mile to work. On the way home, the reverse. At lunch, we would often walk over to Chinatown. In all, I was walking a good 4 to 5 miles per day. In my present job I walk around a lot in construction sites. A project manager I worked with on one site put a mileage counter on his belt and came up with about 7 miles everyday. I've had jobs that I drove to and sat in a cube all day. I got fat, gaining about 25 lbs. One of the main reasons I could never go back to being an office worker is the impact on my health. It's not natural to sit in front of a computer all day. It's tedious and wears you out mentally, which makes you tired and not wanting to work out.

Humans were designed from the ground up to walk. Our legs take up most of our bodies because we are designed to do a hell of a lot of walking. That's what we are; walkers. Having a person sit all day is like taking a fish out of the ocean and putting them in a tiny pot with water. They want to swim, that's what they do, it's what they are designed to do.

Our nieghborhood bitched for a sidewalk for years. Finally a lady that was one of the first to live in our hood got hit and killed.

Soon after we saw some surveyers for side walks.

Almost 10 YEARS later they built the sidewalk, its been a year now and they still aren't done Sad

Most towns aren't designed for walking. There are few sidewalks & no easy street access from the apartments.

Olaf, the report I heard on the network TV news last night (NBC or ABC, I don't rememeber which) said that 1 in 4 Americans have either diabetes or a pre-diabetic condition that puts them at very high risk of getting the actual disease.

Joel, I understand and share some of your frustrations and amazements concerning our fellow fat ugly slob Americans. But there are so many many many exceptions. Also, I wouldn't idolize the Europeans too much. I lived there for five years. Europeans can be vain, arrogant, selfish, and pretty disgusting themselves.

Let's hope that America will again become a place we can be proud of someday. The first step is to get rid of Bush, and that is happening. Even McCain would be a feel-good president next to the monster Bush. Also, there is a rising awareness in this country about all sorts of good things---exercise, better diet, kindness to animals, the environment, etc. These are hopeful signs, don't you agree?

I am intensely critical of America but I love the place and it's my home.

I walk a simple 25 minutes to and from work. My co-workers think I am some sort of masochistic iron man triathlete.
