Banana update:
Many of my bananas have died. Some died over the winter, probably from cold, but a couple more have died since, probably from drought. I've been watering them about once a week, but this is probably not enough. We've had about 6" of rain so far this year.
Poor bananas.
The survivors will be moved into a greywater bed near the house. _________________ "...powerdown so soft and fluffy you'll think you're living in a pillow." - jboogy |

Bananas need lots of water. I water my container ones everyday.

Absolutely--we spread them out on a cookie sheet in the freezer and then put them in baggies after they are frozen, so they don't stick together as much--easier to take out just part of a bag for a winter stir fry or something. I think that we blanch them for a few seconds in the steamer before freezing them, too. But maybe look it up, about blanching, before you do it. |

This sunflower has a lot of seeds, the diameter is over 6":
The sunflowers are candy-cane shaped now and I hope the netting keeps the birds off!
I planted some pumpkin and more gb seeds this weekend.

The recent rains passed by on both sides. Yellow and red on the radar all around me. I was VERY disappointed. The rain guage indicated about 0.1 in. fell here.
Nice pics of your garden, JJ. Are the long beans more tolerant of the heat than bush or pole snap beans? _________________ About my avatar: Guess. |

Oh darn, PeakOiler. We got 1/2 inch of rain here!
The forecast shows plenty of rain chances coming up throughout the week. Here's hoping! _________________ "...powerdown so soft and fluffy you'll think you're living in a pillow." - jboogy |

I have a question about germinating lettuce seeds in hot weather.
I'd like to try to plant some lettuce in protected parts of the garden, but lettuce won't germinate at high temps. So I'm considering mixing lettuce seed with a little moist soil or compost, and putting in a ziploc bag in the fridge for a few days to germinate, then planting the mix in the garden beds. Does this look like it would work? _________________ "...powerdown so soft and fluffy you'll think you're living in a pillow." - jboogy |

how hot are we talking? I continuously planted lettuce in the shade of an apple tree all summer last year and it kept coming up even when the temps hung around 27 (80F)degrees for weeks. Lots of water was provided as well. _________________ shame on us, doomed from the start
