What mileage do you get in highway driving? Your "check engine light " should come on if you need an oxygen sensor. Have you checked the engine timing and other "tune-up" items?
I usually run 40psi or more in tires, or as high as they are rated for on the sidewall. Never had any problems with odd or uneven tire tread wear unless they were low.
As others have mentioned, driving habits and techniques can make a huge difference.

Thanks for the input, but I don't understand the cap and rotor. What is rotor got to do with mpg? And what is cap?
Also, my highway mpg is 32 and I am always easy on the pedal and try to hypermile all the time. But all I can get is 32 mpg.
One more question
Mine is an automatic and when I got it brand new, it used to accelerate nicely when I take my foot from the brakes when it is on D shift. Now it is much slower. Any idea why? I feel like there is an obstruction. BTW, my timing belt was just changed 3 mionths ago, how can I know the timing on the belt is off?

WisJim, a couple of questions, and I mean this honestly. You say you run your tires to 40PSI., What is the maximum printed rating on their sidewalls? The Goodyear tires I use say 31psi is their maximum. Have you compared 41PSI MPG to say 30 PSI MPG? Any improvement I'm one of those old grandpa types left over from the early 70's, who still drive only 55 to 60 mph to save gas, have since 1973. I think if the timing belt was off by a cog you would know it. If acceleration is slow try the injector cleaner and have a look at your throttle cable to see if there is any slack on the adjustment. The cap and rotor are just what sit on the distributor. Change them when you change your plug wires to ensure best electrical contact. On cars these days it is almost impossible without a good ear to just loosen the distributor and adjust the timing. You will need to check it with a timing light. That will only set the idle timing, though. If the timing isn't advancing with higher rpm's it will hurt your mileage. The vacuum system regulates timing advance. Make sure you don't have any vacuum leaks. A good aftermarket manual will provide a complete diagram of the vacuum system.

One more thing, Misterno, when you add the injector cleaner it will harm the mileage of the tank it is in. You should see an improvement on subsequent tanks though.

I have been told that after I pour in the fuel injector liquid, it is better to fill up with premium gas from Shell or Chevron and then drive on highway over 60+ miles/hour so this would allegedly clean the injectors better and faster.
I read this on an other forum, dunno if people were serious. What do you think?

Just put a few gallons in my car. 5.869 gallons and I got 163.9 miles out of it. That comes out to 27.92 mpg.
I earlier got 27.7 mpg, so I improved a good bit, although I'm not sure if this is out of the standard deviation. I had gotten mad one day, so I burned up gas unnecessarily. But I also lowered my hwy mph to 55, down from 60 earlier. I'm hoping to break 28.00 mpg next time.
My light's been on also. Manual says that it's likely something to do with the fuel system, so that could be robbing me of some efficiency. I've been going 55 now instead of my usual 60 for this latest tank of gas. I was up to about 361.2 miles. And my dad just took it in today and the receipt showed 11.736. That's 30.78 mpg up from a mere 27.92 mpg. That's a 10.24% increase in efficiency just from dropping from 60 mph to 55 mph as well as more highway travel instead of some city travel.
It should also be noted that when my dad was filling up my car, I filled up his 20xx Honda Civic, which has not had as much problems with it. It only had 287.2 miles on it with 8.85 gallons put in, or 32.45 mpg, which is less than what my fairly banged up '02 Malibu will get. He drives 95% on the highway (60 miles commute each way ) but goes 70 mph. I'm regulary getting between 30 to 31 mpg with my 2003 MB Sprinter, (same as Dodge Sprinter) high roof, medium wheel base version, 2.7L 5 cyl CDI, manual 5 speed. It is fully loaded to 7700 lb with equipment and tools for my job. Mostly good countryside roads, speed no more than55mph. Some coasting and very little use of the brakes.

Got another tankful. 8.654 gallons got me 267.0 miles. That's 31.89 mpg. Tank-over-tank, I'm up (31.89 - 30.7 1.11 mpg, a 3.6% increase.
Since I've been keeping track, I've gone 1121.1 miles and used up 37.819 gallons => 29.65 mpg.

I've been getting almost 30mpg in my ranger pickup. That's when I have a 100 mile drive or two. Half of it is on the highway, so it really helps the mileage. One time I even got around 32 mpg! I don't go fast, around 60 and try not to gun it.

I found this website a while ago and use it to track my MPG. Neat site. Gives you all kind of stats based on your model of vehicle as well as your ranking in your class/year/model of car.
Here is my 2000 Ford Explorer.
It has a mobile interface so you can input all of your data via a cell phone.
