I stocked up quite a while ago - as I keep telling my family, it's a good idea in earthquake county anyway - but a lot of my stuff is up for expiration. Time to drag it down to Salvation Army and restock. Sounds like best do it soon.

I cant believe how hard it has been to get rice letely.... Luckily I found a local fruit stand that has 5lb bags : )
Other items I get,
Dried Beans
Pasta
Peanut butter
Honey
Dried fruits
Canned chili
Canned fruits and veggies (obviously)
Canned tuna
Daily multi vitamins
The way I figure, I should be able to get enough calories from gathering food. Forget hunting, anything breathing with fur, scales, you name it will be eaten as soon as store shelves run dry. So I stock up on things with lots of proteins and carbs. Just what your body needs to perform each day, then all my vitamins and minerals will be taken care of with the multivitamins.
I'm sure meals will be something like this,
Rice with beans
Rice with gathered veggies and insects
Rice with eggs
Chicken carcass soup with gathered veggies.
Then something like this,
Roasted ferrel cat.
Roasted squirrel
Roasted duck
Fried worms and rice.
Fried (insert other insects) with rice. _________________ Tired of high gas prices? Then stop driving to work, duh..... Learn to Work from home

I work as a stocker at a major grocery store chain "yeah I know , laugh it up " and I have noticed HUGE spikeing in sales of easily stored non pereshables such as Rice, beans , canned meat .
One item that seems a bit off my personal radar but that in the last 6 months has more than trippled its sales volume is canned gravy .
In my observations it is the poorest people that are "stocking up/hordeing" . Its common to see a poor family pushing around a cart that is 50% non perashable canned goods "Spam, ect" .
I have even heard talk more than once recently amoungst coustomers "Grab a few more cans of chili to put back with the rest" , "Get a few more cans of spam if we dont eat it this month it will still be there ."
The tone smacks to me that the very poorest in our country "Single parent homes, Elderly/disabled fixed incomes" arent just worried about a energy crisis induced ression but are in fact down right terrified of a full blown depression .
Sales of fresh meats/produce plummeting while sales of canned/dried beans/rice/meats skyrocket ... people are getting a wiff of smoke from the burning house . |
yeah, I've worked for a grocery store for nine years, four of it night stocking. Its hard work. The public doesn't think we do anything. What they don't realize is that we are trying to feed ten thousand people a day, just throwing stuff on the shelves as fast as we can. (not to confuse working in the grocery store to working in a field, though).
there IS an element of fear in the general populance, but they only realize SOMETHING is wrong; no-one seems to be able to place their finger on it, but it is almost as if the general public realizes they are doing something wrong and are about to be PUNISHED for it.
The incidence of obesity and entitlement is unbelievable. I have people telling me I should be FIRED for putting (fill in the blank) whatever type of produce that came from 3000 miles away on the shelf, because it has a BLEMISH on it. I just think to myself....&%$#$
we have been rat-holing canned fruit, beans, rice, baking goods, disinfectants (alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, antibiotics, etc.)toothpast, soap, etc, etc. pretty much whatever my wife thinks of and doesn't expire in the near future. Still, the storage will only keep us a while if no-one takes it. What about a year from now?
We have some shortages on the shelf; this comes from the warehouse not sending what we order, not the public (although yesterday we sold twenty lifts of hot dog buns in a couple of hours)
Our sales are UP, UP, UP. Whereas we usually sell 5,000 dollars worth of produce a day, we have been selling 10,000 the last couple of months. But my wife says thats because everything costs more. (for example eight pounds of potatoes went from 2.99 to 7.99 last week.)
Still, the public is buying (and according to the sacker, paying for it by swiping their cards).
My co-worker has an inside doctor; he says he's going to get food by trading antibiotics. |

Dang, next thing is rice and worms, then just worms. | Why not just eat the compost? That way you avoid the work in actually gardening. Nutrient rich too. Now I prefer worm compost tea with a spring of mint and a few ice cubes to take the heat out of a summer day.
GASMON I liked the stuff until you showed me those pictures. Those meals are kind of pale and white.
I've succeeded in reverse-engineering Dinty Moore (using only the finest Humboldt grass-fed beef) and have stocked up many cases. Maybe it is time to work on Spam. Other than pork, I wonder what goes into the stuff. Fun challenge. Organic Spam. _________________

Yeah id say it is possible .. however some coustomers are willing to openly tell you that they are hordeing . Like in the example i gave above . If 5-6 coustomers I happen to strike up a conversation with pretty much say "Im making a stockpile for hardtimes." then how many are doing it that i miss ?
its my opinion that low scale hordeing is starting to kick in , especialy amoung the very poor . |
