On the bright side, potatoes are very easy to grow. Assuming of course that you can find some that have not been chemically sterilized...

Maybe it is time to work on Spam. Other than pork, I wonder what goes into the stuff.

Just don't forget the clear jellied ooze that allows the solid block of meatstuff to shlep out of the can with a mighty "plop".

XXpuke

On the upside hormel says it can last virtually forever. Each can is sort of like WIPP - its very own salt dome.

(from Hormel)

Quote:

What is the shelf life of a Hormel Foods product in an unopened can?
The processing techniques utilized by Hormel Foods makes the canned product safe for use indefinitely if the product seal remains intact, unbroken and securely attached to a can that has been well maintained. It is suggested that all canned products be stored in a cool and dry environment to keep the flavor adequately preserved. For maximum flavor it is recommended that the product be used within three years of the manufacturing date. After that period of time, the product is still safe to use however, the flavor gradually declines

Shocked
It hate to think of "declined" spam flavor.

It seems to me that fear is starting to grip some of those most vulnurable to peak oils impending economic woes .
I work as a stocker at a major grocery store chain "yeah I know , laugh it up Razz" and I have noticed HUGE spikeing in sales of easily stored non pereshables such as Rice, beans , canned meat .
One item that seems a bit off my personal radar but that in the last 6 months has more than trippled its sales volume is canned gravy .

In my observations it is the poorest people that are "stocking up/hordeing" . Its common to see a poor family pushing around a cart that is 50% non perashable canned goods "Spam, ect" .
I have even heard talk more than once recently amoungst coustomers "Grab a few more cans of chili to put back with the rest" , "Get a few more cans of spam if we dont eat it this month it will still be there ."

The tone smacks to me that the very poorest in our country "Single parent homes, Elderly/disabled fixed incomes" arent just worried about a energy crisis induced ression but are in fact down right terrified of a full blown depression .

Sales of fresh meats/produce plummeting while sales of canned/dried beans/rice/meats skyrocket ... people are getting a wiff of smoke from the burning house .

Maybe they are PO devotees?

Fresh fruits...hard to afford them. Sometime apples or tomatoes are $1.50 to $2.50 each at Krogers.

We'll eat just about anything down on the permaculture compound.

Nah. It was a joke. But really, compost tea from my worm bin is amazing stuff. You can sell it up here to the pot growers for 50 dollars a gallon. Not that I do. Cool

Canned gravy - the best thing since sliced bread?

Did you mean, the best thing on sliced bread?
Seriously people give the Canned Gravy people a break. You can use it a a basis for a stew; pour it over instant potatoes (and thereby make a bleak meal much more savory, etc.) I have been doing this [putting up more things even if I already have it in the panty], I believe that most people understand on some level that if the fuel stops so does the 'run to the store every five minutes to get a pack of cigs and a pint of milk lifestyle.' I go the the market once a month for the big shop, and only visit as milk and the occasional other item runs out, and my local market it only 2 miles away. I'm not worried about not being able to get there I'm worried about nothing being there when I arrive. Also it's a mild hedge against inflation.
