Hard to believe he would tell other countries to go back to the village and let 'us pros' handle the depletion of fossil fuels.

I find it interesting that you took the statement to say what you thought it was saying.

I actually took it to mean something along the lines of: Indian and Chinese society is more closely tied to their roots and landbase, therefore they stand the highest chance of gracefully returning there. And furthermore it would be VERY MUCH in their best interests to do so, quickly. AND furthermore hopefully others can follow their wise example.

Something more like that, as opposed to the more common and disgusting sentiment of "You little third-worlders can't live OUR lifestyle. There is neither enough ecological robustness nor enough energy for it. So stop trying and let us continue as we have been.

Unfortunately the leaders of those countries are blind. So it becomes more of the blind leading the blind. Right off the cliff.
I don't know about China, but India does have at least a thousand groups promoting natural farming, no artificial fertilizers, chemicals ,ect Unfortunately it also has big companies promoting pesticides like DDT and malathion. Also some GM crops like cotton.

Why is the original poster getting so much heat? I agree with what he said... people in these "up-and-coming" nations need to cool it off and revert to simpler times again. So does the states, but folks are too addicted to the lifestyle for that to be a realistic scenario in the short run...

Seems to me if someone is PO'ed (grin) because China and India "shouldn't be allowed to live the (great) lifestyle of the good-ol' USA, et al," they are a big part of the problem... like many others who aren't on this board.

Simmons is dreaming if he thinks that the Chinese and the Indians are going to curtail their ff use. When you come from that degree of poverty your priority is work, work, work and study,study, study. They will do whatever is required to obtain the oil to power their economies and who could blame them? We in the West now have the 'luxury' to be able to look at problems beyond 'how will I eat today?' and yet still the vast majority of people haven't got a clue and don't want to know.

The only thing that might influence a different approach in Asia is the appalling level of pollution in their cities. Breathing might eventually outweigh wealth creation.

Its not just a pretty simple mistake to assume Simmons is a racist.

What Simmons means is, it is in these people's best self-interest is in maintaining the autonomy of their lives, and stewardship of the land.

The subtext is Global Climate Change.
