I read some article or post or something a few weeks ago, It was about what types of food to grow to survive on. This list of plants were very nutritious, hardy, fast growing, etc...
The only thing I can remember off the list is Jerusalem artichokes....
Any one know what I'm talking about?
Or can anyone recommend some veggies that will grow quickly and be nutritious, grow in hot hot weather.... Then maybe some that grow in cold weather.
I'm trying to put together a 3 or 4 season grow pattern. _________________ Tired of high gas prices? Then stop driving to work, duh..... Learn to Work from home

| I've read that sprouts (bean, broccoli, others) are fast growing enough to stave off starvation, say if you have no food and thegrowing season is just starting, and some are more nutritious than the full grown. They can be grown inside on a windowsill. |

Try "the Doomer's Garden" on down the Planning Indew. It might help. _________________ Local fix-it guy.. |

Four Seasons Harvest by Eliot Coleman is a great book. It will give you some good ideas. There are many others too. Spend hours in the planning for the future threads. _________________ Everybody thinks they're righteous! Adam Baldwin "Jayne" Firefly/Serenity |

For hot weather, I recommend sweet potatoes - you can eat both the tubers and the greens. These take a long season to make tubers. In warmer climates (zone 8 and south, maybe zone 7 with lots of mulch) sweet potatoes naturalize and are perennial.
Also, try amaranth. Some kinds are for leaves, others for seed, some both. If you have the weed "pigweed" you probably already have amaranth.
For cool/cold weather - parsley, turnips, garlic
Perennial planted in Spring - asparagus, basically grows by itself with no care, but takes a few years to be old enough to harvest.
Another perennial - Egyptian onions
Other folks probably have their favorites and successes as well _________________ "...powerdown so soft and fluffy you'll think you're living in a pillow." - jboogy |

burtonridr, you must write your location in your profile, as it matters if you have freezing winters or you can plant year round.
For all climates I recommend mustard spinach, but there are heaps of other plants depending on the climate. I would try to plant at least a part of your garden with starchy things. |

Boise, ID
I'm building a green house this year, so i should be able to extend the growing season by a little. We have about a month and a half when the temperature does not get above 32 degrees, even for a day time high. _________________ Tired of high gas prices? Then stop driving to work, duh..... Boise?
Potatoes
Onions
Broccoli
Spinach
I don't think you'd have much luck with Jerusalem artichokes - they like it hotter.
Cherries might do well there. They can take a lot of cold.

They like it hotter than temps around 100 degrees for a month or two?
You mean it gets hotter in other parts of the world!! I'm already dieing in 100 degrees!!
I dont want to grow them if I'm going to have problems with them, I want plants that will do well in our conditions... I just thought for some reason they would do well in our climate. _________________ Tired of high gas prices? Then stop driving to work, duh..... Learn to Work from home

To be honest I don't know how much "summer" they need but they do pretty well here in New Mexico.

hmm, I will have to research them a little I guess....
Are they worth researching? Or are there better options? _________________ Tired of high gas prices? Then stop driving to work, duh..... Learn to Work from home

Personally I don't like them much - I'd rather grow potatoes (which don't do so well in NM) - I'm just not a fan of the flavor. I have heard that they contain some compounds which don't lend themselves to quantity consumption either...

If there were Jerusalem artichokes growing in northern Wisconsin where I was, I bet they'll grow in Idaho too. |

| J. Arts will grow in Boise. Other than certain grasses, they're the most invasive plant I have growing here in NW MT. |
